Neil coming in

It was really hot. I noticed a guy that I had seen the previous lap, so chatted with him (Manny) as we headed out on lap 3. Not much to report. I wound up passing Manny and continuing on up the hill. Luke was long gone.

I found I was having problems drinking the Cytomax and my stomach felt like it was turning. I continued on. Made it to the top of Dam climb and figured I was at least in for some rolling descent at that point.

A guy a bit in front of me stopped at the feed/water station, but actually had to stop and fill up a cup. I took note of that.

Justin and Tom were down on Ambulance

Trail Paparazzi being paparazzi'd

(More than one person actually commented on my cheering squad early on in the day )

I wound up seeing Luke a bit in front of me at some point. On Tunnel, I think.

Me, heading off of Vic's

I caught up to him on Vic's and asked if he was okay. He said he was taking it nice and easy due to the heat and he couldn't drink anything but water. I was only enjoying the water at that point as well.

I told him I was going to stop after lap 3 and take a break to cool down, eat, and stretch.

He said that'd be a good idea also.

Pulling in after 3 (I think).

We sat down in the shade and took in some food.

I think it was after lap 4 that I took bit longer break. Justin had gotten some ice that I put on my lower back (it was killing me). I had half of a PB&J, half an orange, some more snacks, water, Perpetuem. Justin hosed me down with wet paper towels.

He got out my clean, dry clothes, and following a long break with an amazing back massage I got changed and headed out for 5. I felt much better with clean and dry shorts on.

It was really hot. I wound up giving a few Endurolytes to Jens, who was cramping up on the fire road before Dam climb.

I was dripping sweat. I sipped on Cytomax every other time I took in fluids. It was acceptable while it was cold. When it got to be hot it was hard to drink.

I had stopped at the water station the last lap or so to have water dumped on my back and grab a cup of fresh water. It wasn't always cold, but the extra oz's of H20 were great and kept my bottle of water from running out.

I went out for lap 6. I don't really remember a whole lot about these laps. I think it was Lap 6 that I was riding with Erika, a pro female solo racer from CO.

I commented that it felt really humid. She had just been up in the snow at home. Crazy.

Justin was at the bottom of the switchbacks cheering me on.

Here's Willie descending

Bottom of Marlin

Justin rode up Ambulance and down Tunnel with me (he rode next to me or behind me, no drafting!)

It was nice to have the company, though.

I had taken my Shuffle with me out on lap 6 and it definitely helped to keep me motivated and moving sometimes.

Coming in at the end of lap 6. It was rough.

A few friends had showed up, so that was cool. I was somewhat energized seeing them hanging out.

Justin was trying to push me for 9 laps. I barely wanted to go out for 7. Nam was telling me he expected 4 more! As if!

Lap 7 was difficult mentally and physically. My feet hurt. I was having nerve problems in my right hand/arm. Nothing was comfortable. I felt like I was thoroughly sunburnt. There was little traffic out on the trails. Every now and then I'd be passed by a fast team guy, or pass a slower rider. But that was about it.

A good song came on at the start of Dam climb so I felt energized, but the rest of the lap I paid for it. I slowed down to a crawl. I had been walking nearly every steep uphill for 2 laps.

I came in before 4:50 and snacked a bit, had an ear of corn off the BBQ.

I decided to ride the Canzo for lap 8. It'd be a little more comfortable, and I hoped the different fit/feel might help with comfort.

I knew this would be my last lap. Math and timing be damned; I was done.

Going out for 8

I rode out just behind Erika, also on her 8th lap. I cleaned the steep bit just after the sand trap to lots of cheers down below. I continued on and caught up with Erika and chatted. I had a fresh jersey covering my shoulders.

I had been searching for a lap and a half for my "race song" and *finally* it came on after listening to the beginning of every other song on my shuffle like 2-4 times. Seriously.

It totally re-energized me and I took off up the climb. I wasn't setting a blazing pace, but for lap 8 it was pretty darn good IMO.

I headed up the climb and felt pretty good. I don't think I went for the steep 180 climb, but I did make it through the rock garden on the singletrack for probably the first time all day (maybe second).

I felt really good. I saw Trizz near Marlin and we both said it was our last lap. I hammered down the singletrack, up Ambulance... felt good. The breeze was nice. The temperature was near perfect.

Coming off of Vic's I noticed the sunset in the distance and felt very much at peace with this lap.

I came around the bend, hammered out of the saddle past our pit and into the finish.

I was at mile 87.9, so pedaled back to the pit with it on.

Justin had a warm spicy sausage and roll for me which I slowly munched on while I sipped Perpetuem and Pepsi. I felt basically flat and in a daze. I didn't want to move. I just kept staring off into space.

Luke came around before dark and we cheered him in.

Man, what a long day.

We checked the results, and then they tapped the keg, so we grabbed a couple oz's of Fat Tire. It was goood. We went back to where we were all pitted (now in the near dark) to tell Eric and Luke the beer was flowing. I realized I probably should've had some more to eat since I felt the beer pretty quickly.

I got into dry clothes and we took our chairs back to the start/finish area for the raffle and award's.

A last finisher came in I think just before 9.

They did the raffle (thanks again to Luke for trading prizes ) and then awards.

Pro/Expert women Solo

Expert men solo - Luke in 3rd!!

Sport Women Solo - 1st place

Beginner men solo (Dubjay 2nd and Trizz 3rd)

Solo Clydesdale - Neil in 2nd

Lucky for Eric his class was small

Duo Podium (Sho-Air 1st place)

Heidi had the fastest female lap with 51 minutes. Fastest lap was like 45:54 or something? Ridiculous!!

We actually were in the truck after saying goodbye's at 10:03, so it all happened really efficiently.

The event was super well run and organized. The registration tent was set up Friday evening and it went really smoothly.

Saturday morning everything was organized and set up. The race started exactly on time. There were moto's all over all day making sure people were okay. The water station was fully stocked with cups and water all day.

The event was great. I'm hoping I can race the event in November as well!!

Thanks to Tom, Andrea, Haley and baby for coming out in the morning, and our roadie buddies in the afternoon Sorry I wasn't really social!

I was supposed to be on a 3-man team, 3rd guy couldn't make it at the last minute so we did a 2-man team. Doing more than what you trained for is tough!!!!!

I was so out of it after the 3rd lap (from a little before 2 to a little after 3 is when I was riding).

I was so out of it that I had 2 bottles on my bike, one for drinking (sports drink mix) and one just water for showering myself to stay cool. Well, I took the sports drink mix and poured that all over myself not knowing which bottle I had...oopsss!!

Also was mixing everything up in camp afterwards, it was a mess!

Took a nap had a pretzel and was good to go.

We only got 8 laps in but we really never prepared to only have 1:15 between laps so we were proud of ourselves. We are actually going to train for 2 man in november and hopefully get atleast 10 laps in then

oh man, where to start

Yesterday was a big day, everyone with the Adrenaline team did an awsome job, and the support crew couldnt have been better. Traci kept me alive, told me what to do and I just listened and did it. She was awsome, (thanks again Traci for everything), And Dave, i wouldnt be off of my bike before he is already hanging it up and making sure it was good to go for the next lap,

Kelly she was a life saver with the ice, and even got a few good shots of us while she was at it, (you owe us)

the race it self was definetly no joke.
Lap 1 i came in felt great, refueled and went right back again,
Lap 2 I cam in and was suprised by my wife who secretly showed up. I still felt pretty good, fuled up and went back out.
Lap 3 like everyone els this is where it was like wow. this is nuts, just keep pedaling and get back so you can take a break, made it through and took a good rest, cooled off with ice and gatoraid, cold towels, put my feet up and let some swelling go down, decided to head out for lap 4
Lap4 I somehow felt great on this lap after lap 3 i thought my day was going down hill, caught up with Steve and we kinda kept with eachother and got through lap 4 came in i was feeling good and wanted to take advantage of it, so i fuled up and took off, i wanted to be back before 7 so i could rest and depending on how i felt, i wanted my personal goal of 6.
Lap 5 was a killer, the hills seemed to grow bigger, and my legs were starting to become dead. When i finnaly reached the top of the dam climb i knew it was all fun ahead so i booked it, and got back at 6:30 and had a good rest. because i was only 1 lap away from my goal and i wasnt drained yet i forced myself to go back for lap 6 and i wanted to secure my 3rd place finish i wasnt even awar of until this point that i could place.
Lap 6 MY FASTEST LAP not sure of the exact time because they dont actually keep time per lap, its just a continous clock. but anyways, i was like, this is it, leave it all here, i knew once i got to the to of dam climb i could haul ass the rest of the way down. made it through lap 6 and right at the end, the last little techy section if you would call it that, everyone had been biffing there all day, and all day i did not fall off my bike, and 50 yards from the finish, i got caught up right there and sorta OTB or over the side type thing. got up didnt even brush off, just hauled in to finish my 6th lap.

Dave was right there with a beer just like he told me he would be, and boy did that taste awsome.

and in the middle of all this chaos Traci and Dave peformed like champions keeping us going.

Well here I am one year later after buying my first bike and joining STR. I have been basically riding with Neil and crew every weekend for the last 9 months and let him talk me into racing at Temecula after he got me on my Yeti.

I was NERVOUS before it started but Neil and Tracy's mental coaching calmed me down quite a bit and actually going out to see them in action back in Jan showed me how laid back it can be. The only person I had to race was me. Simple.

Except it was waaaay hot. Lap 1 obviously felt good. Came in and saw my better half waiting for me with our dog Patches. Went back out for 2 fairly quickly. Came in and saw one of my best friends Art (Dirthead) had shown up. Went out for lap 3 and whoah. This is when sh!t hit the fan for me. I blew my wad trying to get up than DAMN! hill climb and lost my heart rate. Ended up walking alot of it. By the time I got to Marlin I was feeling bad and somewhere in Tunnel of Love I threw the towel in. I told myself that 3 for a beginner is good enough. I overheated and just hated it. I cursed my bike. I cursed Neil! During that lap both my soles separated and it really sucked trying to pedal. I also had my first crash on this lap (no bad crashes) so was covered in dirt as well. I came in and told Alyssa I am done. Well Tracy would have none of it. She and Alyssa got me cooled down and I went to town on my pasta, put new shoes on and stood in the shower. Put my IPOD on and went out for 4. What a difference. I did not think it was possible to reenergize like that. Pedaled up that DAMN! hill and had major fun out there. I remember hitting Tunnel of Love when the Trooper (Maiden) came on and singing aloud to myself, more like shouting. So I decided to do lap 5 and during this lap I knew it would be my last since it was getting late and I was getting tired. So I made it a cruiser lap and cruised home.

Thanks Tracy and Dave. Laps 4 and 5 happened because of you two. Thanks to Greg for sharing his campsite with me and congrats to Stevie and Troy (podium!), Carl and Weyland and Chinese Taco guy! Thank you Neil and Tracy for putting me far far away from Dave's tent so that I could finally enjoy mine!! Thanks Shudder for sharing your stories and lots of love to my girlfriend for sitting in that heat while I killeded myself! Oh yeah thanks
Nam for re-iterating my nickname over and over and over and over and.........I'm gonna go drink beer and pass out in my garage now.

What a day! First off, the event was very well put together. This was my first time doing a 12 hr. and also first time riding this area. Awesome course!

At 9am starting out on the pavement for the parade lap it was obviously going to be a VERY hot day. I decided to start very slow from the very back of the pack. The few miles of basically flat fire road leading up to the Damn Climb was a nice way to ease into the race. Being that I was on a SS I was spun out on this section so I sat up and stretched out the lower back and tried to get my head in the right place for all of the torture to come. I felt great on the first climb passing a lot of geared riders who put time on me on the flat section. Lap 1 went well and I didn't spend too long in the pits before I started lap 2. I took 2 bottles on every lap after the first as the heat was really building. One Accelerade and one w/ water. Lap 2 still felt great. Lap 3 was starting to get tough as the heat was just relentless. I took about a 25 min break at the end of lap 3 to run cool water down my back and over my head - wow, that felt unbelievable. Through the first 3 laps my times were consistently around an hour or less (ride time) but lap 4 I was miserable and my energy levels and lap time fell off quite a bit so at the end of lap 4 I took a LONG break at around 45min. I was over cooked and at the time had no thoughts of getting back on the bike any time soon. I took a cold shower and changed into fresh gear which felt amazing, especially the cold shower. I sat with my feet up, socks off and got down a cold drink, an Odwalla bar, and a bowl of chilled fruit.

I finally started feeling halfway recovered so I set out for lap 5. Pretty uneventful, I remember feeling sluggish with all of the food to digest and after such a long break. Lap six I was planning on taking it easy but a female racer (bright green jersey?) passed me and was really pushing the pace up the climbs so I did my best to keep up (w/almost 60 mi. on my legs) she seemed to be very fresh I'm assuming a team rider. We went back and forth up the Damn Climb as I would pass her and then I would get off and walk the steeper sections to try and conserve some energy and she would spin past me. We went back and forth for 2/3 of the lap until I finally lost her in the canyon area S.T. She was riding really hard and was a good push for me to get my head back into the race so I could keep going. By this time is was starting to cool off to a more tolerable level and my energy started returning.

Lap 7 was when I really started feeling good again as I caught and passed a teammate who had made time on me during all of my extended breaks. This was just what I needed to keep my head in the race. Lap 8 was probably some of my best riding of the day besides having to walk some of the Damn Climb, I was still powering up all of the short steep climbs and attacking the S.T. I really felt good lap 8 although I could tell my body was going to hate me in the morning and probably for the next week. As I came in, I realized I had plenty of time to do another lap, I think it was 7:20 but another SS rider had already completed 9 laps having not taken many breaks (unthinkable) so he already had it wrapped up, I was in second and third was a couple laps back so I decided to call it a day after 8 laps. I was shooting for 9 or 10 laps but with the heat 8 seemed pretty respectable. A little under 90 mi. on a SS self supported in 100 degree weather with absolutely no shade - not too shabby I guess. Some crazy fast times in the mid 40's - WOW! Congrats to everyone who was out there participating, it took a lot of heart to continue in the heat.

Since the race (20 hrs.) I've had a recovery drink, 2 chili dogs, bag of chips, Double Double, choc. shake, huge breakfast w/ 3 eggs, HUGE piece of ham, country potatoes, 2 pieces of toast, OJ, countless glasses of water, another Double Double, another choc. shake, protein shake, a box of mac n' cheese, and 3 naps...wheh that was tough. Not the best quality recovery food but I'm finally back to my weight.

Thanks everyone for such a great time, Great group of people I met this weekend. I am exhausted.

I was aiming to do 8 laps but only got around to 6. 4th in my class right behind troy.

I ate all the food I brought, which I thought was more than enough, and weighed myself when I got home, just before the amazing shower, and I lost 13-15 lbs in one day!!!! I drank 420oz of water and 192oz of gatorade and was still dehydrated. Looks like I need a 100oz camelbak now, 70oz is not cutting it. Thanks again guys and gals.

This is my first 12 hour race or race period, we really did it for "fun"?? Put together a 4 man team and proudly called ourself Team Second to Last so I hope we didn't bag last place.

I was #4 out and by the time I get to go it was around 1 and 1 million degrees!!!!! I brought my SS and figure I would not last 1 miles on it so I promptly demoed a intense spyder 29er. Damn that thing was fast but just as I was feeling great big ring up ambulance road? The XT shadow rear deraileur completely exploded and locked up the rear wheel. Found a quad and driven by 14 year olds and held on for dear life back to camp.

LOST THAT LAP!!!! SOOOOOO MAD!!!!!!!!!!!!

So for my second lap I demoed a ells evolve and also has the same XT shadow but finished the lap at least.

Hope we got what we came for, second to last place! And no my 1.5 lap is not my fault. I finished all the climb already, and missed all the fun parts!

Congrats to everyone, esp. my teammate Allison who trained really hard and deserved it all.

I wish I was there out there too, but truthfully I've been sick for the past two weeks. It wouldn't have been good.

You gals and guys rule!!

It was hot, did anyone mention that yet?
Had a good race but all I cared about was how Steve, Troy and Jason were doing since I had talked them into trying out some "mellow, race at your own pace" endurance racing....sorry guys!
I am extremely proud of those 3 and to have Troy nab a 3rd place in Beginner Men's Solo was the icing on the cake! Well done you guys and Allison: you train, you win!! Nicely done
Thanks to all that hung out, helped out, raced, camped, cramped- that hurt on lap #4-, motivated and cheered...it was a kick ass weekend and now only 3 days to Downieville!
