Default Claremont Wilderness Park car burglar caught

CLAREMONT -- A man suspected of burglarizing cars in the parking lot of the Claremont Hills Wilderness Park has pleaded guilty to criminal charges and will spend two years in state prison.

Robert William Wilson, 27, was arrested on June 3, according to Claremont police.

Over the past 12 months, police said, more than 20 people have returned to their vehicles at the park to find their windows smashed and personal items stolen.

Police caught Wilson when he tried to burglarize a Toyota Camry. Officers waited and followed him after he set-off a vehicle's alarm and tried to leave in a Dodge Neon.

Police arrested him on Mills Avenue south of Baseline Road. They said he had masking tape on his front and rear license plates and miscellaneous burglary tools and drug paraphernalia inside his car.

The Camry's owner left a laptop computer on the rear seat, which they said caught Wilson's interest.

The Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office filed attempted burglary and possession of burglary tools charges, and he pleaded guilty June 5.

The intelligence of thieves never ceases to amaze me. I'm sure he wasn't planning on getting caught, but wouldn't logic tell you that if you are doing something high risk, at least remove evidence that could get you into even more trouble?

I was wondering why they had posted signs about leaving stuff in your car. I just figured the city had some money that they needed to spend. I'm glad they caught the guy, because if I caught him breaking into my car, he wouldn't be able to walk again. People stealing stuff really pisses me off.

I don't know I do think it is pretty stupid of the Camery owner to put a laptop in clear plain view site.

If he can think that far or think at all then he would figure out being a thief does not pay. He obviously didn't think about that.

Finally! I've been wanting to park farther up and hike up evey canyon... but that area has smashed windows kinda frequently. Hopefully he was the only one doing this S#it.

I had been noticing a lot more claremont PD racing up the road super fast... I knew what they were up to. Props to Claremont PD for getting this guy!!!

Props to Claremont PD on catching this thief and I hope this wards off any other thiefs in the vicinity.

I rode up Evey last Friday. We both noticed all of the glass. He was pretty nervous about leaving his car there and I think we ended up riding a little faster than usual.

I never even heard about anything recent, but I did see a little old lady whose car had been broken into, yep, a smashed window.

I rode there this evening and the place only had a few cars.
