Default Sycamore Canyon (Pt. Magu) - 6/4/08

It was a beautiful but overcast morning in the Western Santa Monica Mountains. This was my first time back to Pt. Magu in nearly twelve years! Nothing major has changed.........still one of the gems in Southern California. Impy (Colette) and I began our ride from the PCH side at around 8:15AM. Things didn't start out so great, as Colette was stung by a yellow jacket. She cursed out and screamed at the bee so loud that it actually flew away before she could seek vengeance on it! We scanned the scene, heard A LOT of buzzing, and realized that we'd better get the hell out that spot ASAP!!!!!!
Overall, the trails were in great shape, however Big Sycamore Fire Road had several deep water crossings. Additionally, a lot of the trails (singletrack) were beginning to become overgrown with brush, sage, and lots of poison oak........and lots of 'prickly' things.
Along the route, Colette and I met up with Doug (Abui), and the three of us continued on with the ride until it was time to head home. I wish I could give you a play by play with the route.......Colette can likely chime in.
A big thanks to Colette for taking me out on this awesome ride. Doug, it was great meeting you and congrats on your new grandson! If you don't know Doug, this guy can REALLY ride!!!!!!

Here are a few pics from the ride........

Wish I could ride on weekdays! We were just up there a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. It was actually the GF's first ride off the pavement. The creek crossings on Big Sycamore Fire Road weren't too bad, about 6" deep I would say. My feet stayed dry if I leveled my pedals.

I did notice two foxes trail was super narrow with a lot of growth. I don't mind bugs, but I'm seriously scared of a rattler sittin' on that path and/or to the side. I don't think I'll get in there again.

We plan on going back Saturday, actually...checking out Guadalasca trail on the way up and heading back down via overlook.

Guess I should learn to spot poison oak!!

It was fun meeting up with TrojanInsomniac and Impy.

A quick shot of TI handling a steep gulley. In real life the climb looks to be near vertical. Penalty for failure is cactus spines. (Cheap GoPro camera)

Note to Dino Brown - I cleaned the steep gulley not because of skill.........it was all the DW-Link!
