Default RR: Chino Hills - sign said closed

Well I decided to get back on my bike after a long absence. Decided to ride up to CHSP from the Brea side on Monday to celebrate my day off. I had a feeling the trail may be closed due to the rain we had.

So as i made my way up to the trail head, I could clearly see the signs saying "Trail Closed". As I got off my bike to stretch a little and take in the thoughts of what my ride could have been, I see a group of riders blow on by the signs. One guy goes up North Ridge trail and the other group went up Telegraph Canyon. They even had small kids with them.

As I stood there I couldn't help think of what it means to obey the trail signs. I'm sure the park ranger just forgot to change the signs back to open but I DID obey the closed sign and turned around and went home.

When I got home my wifey said "wow that was quick". I said yep the park was closed.

Not really sure why i wrote this RR other than I felt my fellow MTRs should have obeyed the signs. As I read post after post about areas being closed down, i just get a little frustrated when i see large numbers of people say it must be okay if they are doing it.

Carry on!!

The rangers didn't forget to move the signs. The park was closed on purpose to let some spots with poor drainage dry. Thanks for respecting the closure. I wanted to ride CHSP Monday but just went to the loop instead. I know KonaDupee did the same because we saw him there.

Some of the rangers at CHSP are very cool with mountain bikers, others are not. Anything we can do to help our image among the rangers is a good thing.

I have heard of rangers at CHSP writing tickets for people not obeying the closed sign and riding anyway. I would have done the same, turned around and rode elsewhere.

I have been faced with that decision many times, e.g., Should I ride or not? The sign say’s “Closed,” but it’s beautiful, what the F?!? I have to admit, I have gone when the park has been closed, but I have not enjoyed it. Call me paranoid, but it’s hard to have fun when you know a park ranger can slap you with a $300+ ticket. Plus, it messes up the trials when it’s wet. I now go for a run when CHSP is closed. Thanks for the posting. Great topic.
