Default 2nd Annual Pedals & People Poker Run

Fun times for sure!!

We headed down early this morning to Sweetwater for Zumwalt's Bicycle Center's 2nd Annual Pedals & People biking event, complete with Poker Run. Eric and the good folks at Zumwalt's put on quite the fun affair, with bikes to demo, trails to ride, raffles to win, and food to eat.

Upon arriving at about 8:30, things were already cranking at the venue. Easy ups were going up for the demo bikes (by Yeti, Rocky Mountain, Cannondale, Titus, Giant, and Diamondback). There were lots of bikes to try, and it seems like everyone got to test what they came for...only heard good things about it!

The bike demos getting set up

I came to test one special bike in particular that Eric was keen enough to hook me up with by pulling some strings at the last minute.

Yeti dirt jumper...ohhhhh yeah!

Oh my gosh...it was really, really fun!! I rode it around, carving some turns on the pavement and with every turn, I could actually feel the bike accelerating. Drool!!!

bajamtnbkr (Jose) with his demo for the day...Yeti 575...the guy has good taste

Got to meet fellow STR members rmb_socal, emfc, and Taco Jack!

Temps were already warming up, so I was anxious to get the Poker Run started. Eric gave us some instructions and we were on our way.

El Jefe and his lovely wife giving us the skinny

I had never ridden the trails on this side of Sweetwater, so everything was unknown. We did some fire roads then lots of singletrack climbs and descents. The ride was just under 8 miles with almost 1000' of elevation gain.

Dorothy, are we in Kansas??

Seriously, the grass is so extremely dry out there. Really scary to think of what kind of kindling it could make.

Man blong Gaua (Dan-o) waves for the camera

bajamtnbkr leads the train up the hill toward checkpoint #1

Isn't this one a little young to be a dealer? Ben gets his card

Dan-o with Sweetwater Reservoir in the background

I spy, with my little eye...another train of riders

Yours truly, sdniner (er, yeti)

Just 'cause I liked it

We opted for the 'advanced' route which took us up to the Tiki Hut and then down a loose, steep set of switchbacks. Then, some pretty steep climbing. Repeat 2 or 3 times.

Strange...this tiki hut was lacking fruity drinks and cute paper umbrellas...where's my Scorpion Bowl??!

I was collecting my poker hand along the way, and ended up with a pretty lame hand...K, 3, 5, 9 of diamonds.

We finished out the ride, and I collected my last card. Not a winner

Afterwards, we mingled and chatted with lots of folks...I spent a good amount of time talking with Everett from SDMBA and Ariel & Abby from Yeti. All great folks!!

Free lunch (and who doesn't like that?!) was yummy, and there was plenty to go around for everyone.

GrillMaster 5000...they were even using mesquite! Nice touch!

Mmmmm

With full bellies, we waited around in the shade for the raffle.

How many riders are under this little tree?

Tickets were a really good deal...$1 for 1 or $20 for 30...proceeds benefitted SDMBA and the San Diego Bicycle Coalition. With so many tickets in the mix, I knew I was going to score...and I did...3 times!

In anticipation of the raffle (by the way, one of the best orchestrated, most timely raffles I've ever seen...nice!!)

What did I win?? See the list below

The swag was great, and for my $20 investment, I walked away with:

a THE skid lid (um, fate?)
Canari bib shorts
2 Vittoria road tires (which I sooo needed for my bike)
Giro ball cap
a pair of Sock Guy socks
beach cruiser saddle
cable pros and
two water bottles

bajamtnbkr scores and digs around for his grand prize...

Jose scored a sweet pair of Oakleys and models the bling for me! woot!

All in all, I have to give props to everyone who made the day a success and the good time that it was!! Bravo!! They made the event, even in the heat, run smoothly! Looking forward to next year Extra special thanks to Eric, Abby, and Ariel!

When a bike *shindig* brings out good people it's a recipe for Sucess (even it's a 100 degrees)

Glad to see you got a chance to meet Abby & Ariel they are REALLY good people! I thought you'd met Kurt before at the Snow Summit demo - He's pretty awsome as well.

You'd never know they both (Abby & Ariel) were/are nationally ranked pro's! No attitude there - just a passion for the things they love BIKES!

Glad to see such a successful day down south - looks like everyone made out well!

Abby is leading a no drop ride in D-ville on Friday during the gathering - esp for me (and other gals lacking dh dept)

Great ride for sure, good to finally meet everyone. I didn't win anything in the raffle, some dude won 5 different goodie bags. For the Poker run: I had a awesome hand going, Ace, King, Queen, Jack, until the last card and then a damn 7 of hearts, Crap!

I demo'd a Slayer SXC, such a pimp bike. I have ridden those trails probably a hundred times and that bike made the trails that mush easier.

BTW I saw first hand what that place does in a fire, it went up quick.

Thanks Zumwalts for putting on a fun event.

Gee that looked like fun and good job not mentioning the heat! The obvious! Next time I visit mama, I'll have to bring my mtn bike and you can guide me. I only know Noble down there!

Arrived a little late and had to play catch up; which I never did. Sorry I didn't get to meet the Str members who were there. I came down from Temecula by myself and didn't know anyone. I did meet SDyeti; just before I left. Thanks to the guys and girls at Zumwalts for a good time.

Thanks everyone for a good time today! Yes, the heat was present..... The Guys and Girls at Zumwalts put on a good event, and the food was grub! Demos like this are always fun. Good to meet some STRers today, emfc and SDyeti. We need more events like this in San Diego!

Had a great time today, nice riding with STR peeps, my best part of the ride was to ride on a 2008 Yeti 575, wow!! Great riding with you guys: Eric, Steph and Dan, ok at one point I was near them on the trail before they took off
I rode from my house and back adding 9.5 miles to the ride, it most had been on the low 90's on the ride home.
I only have a few pictures, too hot to stop, thanks Eric and Zumwalts for a great event, food and gifts.
