Talking First time at the BMX track-SD

So I finally made it out to the Kearny Moto Park for some fun. And what fun we had, it was awesome. Luna, Tooker, Lino, & myself were all riding and having a good time. It was my first time and I will admit I was a little out of my element at first. But after a few laps I was feeling good and doing better than I expected. I took my RFX so that wasn't the best weapon of choice for this but my Chameleon is currently broken down and in need of some powdercoating. However, as soon as my Chameleon is built back up it will definitely be making it's way to the BMX track. Overall I had a great time trying something new and can't wait to make it back out there. They run Wed & Fri at 5:00pm and Sun at 11:00am. Practice is for 2 hours and then they have races. Sorry I didn't have my camera so no pics. Later.

Do they still have practice afterward?? We used to show up around 7 to practice...maybe they have changed the times?

It was a blast for sure at the BMX track. I love riding the BMX track.

We have alot of top riders here, since we have a replica course for the Olympic BMX track in China at the Chula Vista Olympic training center.

Glad you enjoyed yourself Darryl, they had a good turnout of riders last night.

We'll go again in two weeks or less, wait till our kids are older we'll be local's.

Racing starts at 7pm.

The races are at 7, I am not sure how long they run but they do have open riding after the races. The races didn't seem like they could have taken too long, we stayed for maybe 6-7 races and that was only like 5-10 minutes.

Sweet, I've been thinking about checking that place out one night after work. Thinking my Stumpy may be too much bike and may just bring an old HT.
Let me know next time you guys are going, I would prefer not to be the only "old guy" on a MTB getting run down by those fast ass kids.

Let’s do an STR night out there and buy the track for the night.

Let me know how much it costs, although we can just go as a group on Wed or Fri, there weren't that many people out there anyway.

I recently visited the Orange Y BMX track here in the OC. I must admit it looked like fun. I would have to imagine the skills learned on the track would be put to great use on the trail.

While I was there I saw a few BMX bikes for sale. I couldn't believe how cheap they were. I could but 2 entire bikes for the price of my current fork.

Good luck, be safe.

Orange rents the track out on Saturdays for birthday parties - most tracks do, I believe. On average, the cost is about $200 for 2 hours, then $100 an hour. Not bad.

tbowren, you're absolutely correct. Some of the most skilled mountain bike racers (particularly DH and 4X, but some XC - Tinker Juarez) have BMX backgrounds.

Just come on out, HT would probably be better.

You need a FF helmet, long sleeves, pants & $5 for practice fee.

We normally go every other Wed. when we start going again to the BMX track.

The young kids rip for sure, but most let off by the first turn. All try to get the holeshot & after that they just cruise around the track. They only go all out around the track when the races start.

There was a 40+ Marine who just came back from Iraq who was killing it last night on the track, he ripped for sure.

What's crazy is you can ride for 3 hours no problem, but try doing 3 laps back to back & your tired

Anyways a few of my buddies also been going on Sun. with there young kids to get them started.

I just recommend you watch the first round of races to see how fast some of these kids are, the guys & gals out there are impressive to say the least.

I should also add that my girlfriend, who is only a novice mountain bike rider, after watching me at the track wanted to try it out. She's ridden about 3 or 4 times now, and her bike handling skills are already noticeably improved. This last weekend, we went to Gooseberry Mesa, and I was impressed to see her riding and pumpinig the slickrock like it was jumps on the BMX track. Her weight shift timing over mounds, rolling drops, and G-outs is considerably better already.

Was just thinking, do they require you to buy an annual ABA membership as well?

I used to be one of those fast ass kids; boy have things changed.

Some tracks may offer a 1 day license. Orange, for example, has a one day deal for $15. If you want to fully commit to the $45 annual membership (I think that price is correct), then they'll credit that $15 toward the full membership if you do it that night. Many tracks will also throw in several practice sessions and a race or two into the cost of the membership, which essentially brings down the yearly cost significantly.

If you were fast back in the day, it'll come back to you. I raced 20+ years ago, and I'm just a recent returner. My skills are coming back, but I really need to work on my endurance.
