Default What are you carrying for VQ/CC?

Thought it might be interesting to compare what folks are carrying (food, liquid, clothing, parts, tools, etc.). Last year I saw everything from the minimal (short sleeve jersey, 8 GUs) to people like me with a loaded HAWG.

Right now I'm leaning toward loading up again, since my goal is just to finish and know it's going to take me a long time. So I want to be able to handle a repair if possible.

Liquid: start with 2 qts gatorade, bring some powder to mix at aid stations. Might leave more powder in drop bag at aid station 2.

Food: Probably start with 2 Clif bars and a few GUs. Extra GUs in the drop bag. They will have food at the aid stations. I'm worried about getting enough salt, though. Any suggestions?

Clothing: I'm wimpy, and I'm starting at 5:00 am so I'll be wearing leg warmers, jacket, long finger gloves.

Parts: Tube, spare cable, speed patches

Tools. Multi-tool. Pump. Plus maybe a leatherman.

Misc: LED hiking headlamp for the first hour climbing in the dark. Some first aid stuff.

Rolling on 29" dubs!

Default

first off, i am doing the 5am start.

clothing-my fav. $30 pair of voler shorts, some knee warmers, base layer, jersey, armwarmers and a light jacket. getting some full fingered gloves tomorrow.

light- we need about 1 1/2 hours of light. by sn up, i HOPE to be around Beek's Place (remember, it will probably be abit muddy). i just bought a 700 candlepower serfas led light from my lbs. it was about $24. uses 3 aaa batteries, it's hooked up to my bar. i will use it as a flash light to get my crap ready before the start, as well.

tools-definately some chain links (gearies, you better have quite a few of these and some chain lube!!!). i ride a ss, so i do not was to be stuck if i break my chain (i can't rely on someone else using the same chain as me). also, 2 tubes and some glueless patches. my pump, levers, crank bro mini tool.

nutrition-i feel comfortable comsuming about 1 1/2 scoops of gnc hydropro per hour. so, i will make concentrated bottles (5 scoops per 16-20 oz or so)for the each leg, i am hoping i can complete each leg in about 3 1/2 hours. I will try to have a 2 Cliff bars in my jersey from the start to Aid #2.

To Aid #2, I will sending a Cliff bar, a flask of Gu (maybe about 4 shots in a small plastic bottle) and another baggie of my concentrated HydroPro. Heck, maybe even some socks (just in case my feet get wet on Maple). I would hate hiking in wet socks, but then I think the insoles would be wet too....argh, i'll have to think about that)

All in all, I hope to have 3-4 flasks of Gu, 3 concentrated bottles of Hydro Pro in total, 3 Cliff bars. Plus I will top off my Camelback with plain water at each stop.

Oh, as far as cramping goes, I will have a few tabs of Tums in my jersey pockets and maybe my Camelback. The Calcium in Tums does wonders for cramps, but you need to take them before you cramp. They also soothe your stomach abit.

I have heard that those Enervit tabs are great too. I will try to pick some up from that Cycling Concept shop in Cerritos in the next day or two.

Argh, my hands are tired, I gotta hit the sack too. Get some sleep guys and I hope every one of us finishes!!!! Good luck!!!

For tires I am running 2.1 WTB Nanoraptors. Low rolling resistance. Clears mud quickly....doesn't pack up. Excellent traction on just about everything. 520 grams.

Here is a little trick for those of you that get cold feet. Place a plain plastic sandwich baggy over your feet and socks, then place in shoes. This will keep the cold air off your sweaty feet. They also help if the front of your shoes get a little wet. You don't feel them when you are pedaling.

Great idea aout the baggies on you feet.

oh, and i had a quick q for you all.

for the bag that is advanced to aid #2;
do yo have to get this bag to switchback before the race? or, can i bring it on "race" day???

i am doing the early start. but, if i gotta drop a bag off a switchback by tomorrow (which ain't gonna happen) then i am going to have to plan on carrying enough nutrition.

thanks!
