Poison Oak....
Please send your "Hate Mail" to the mailbox of one... Dino Brown!

If it means anything... I have an OAK BURN on my forehead/temple.

Usually not a problem for me.
I was riding along, and grazed oak with my helmet. The branch broke... fluid from inside the branch got on my temple... Thought I rubbed it off... Woke up Sunday to a blister.

Uhh... My apologies everyone!

Bummer Dino. But we all knew it was there and I would do that ride again in a nano-second!!

What I normally do after a ride (in which oak is present) is wash off with a "soap" that is tough on grease (RUBBING ALCOHOL, Dr. Bronner, Tecnu, Boraxo, Ajax etc.). Usually in the parking lot!

At the restaurant, I literally washed my arms, leg and face in their restroom sink 3-4 times. Not the perfect solution. Washing off immediately would have been 100X better. Best I could do.

Hopefully my recommendations will be helpful- next time!
Dan, Liz and Steph.... Sorry!

My favorite after ride tonic when on the Gabrielleno, at a great price.

One small spot on top of my wrist. I feel lucky with only that, because we went through a lot of the PO that day. But I would do it again in a heartbeat. Love that ride.

What should I put here?

Perhaps this should be in it's own thread, but I'll post here since people are watching, and have been affected.

If you know you're sensitive there's a product called Ivy Block that you put on beforehand. I've used it and it works really well. But lately I've been going the natural route, and have had a pretty good run using the old native american remedy for poison oak.

Try taking a bunch of leaves of mugwort, which usually grows near poison oak, roll it up into a ball and crunch the leaves so they're bruised and aromatic, form them into a pad or a ball then vigorously and repeatedly wipe down any areas that have been exposed to the PO. Do it at the bottom of the trail, immediately after the contact.

You can also do this before contact with the poison oak as a kind of natural barrier, but I'd still follow that with an after-contact rubbing. I've just been making a bit of habit of taking a few leaves when I see them (since there is almost always PO around), and doing it.

Last time I rode down the Gabrielino was a solo ride and I didn't wear pads or sleeves. I did the mugwort wipedown at Oakwilde. It was a good three hours before I got into a shower, and the only place I got a PO was on the inside of my elbow, where I didn't wipe with the mugwort (since I didn't remember brushing any with the inside of my arm).

I've become very sensitive over the years, so I'm becoming a believer in the "old" ways.

We had Tecnu in the car but it took a while to go up and get the trucks and then I didn't have enough water to wash it off.

So, I did baby wipes but apparently that didn't work as well.

Last time we did Gabrielino, I put Tecnu on my legs immediately after the ride and poured water from my Nalgene bottle on them. I only got one tiny spot. This time, it's not really that bad either but it's there.

Dan, on the other hand, broke out very quickly. By that I mean about 18 hours. I take about 48 h.

After reading this thread, I noticed three small spots (around 1/8" each) in the crook of my left arm. WTF ...72hrs later? It's been decades since my last PO encounter.

Kanga, thanks for the prevention tips. Any suggestions on what to do after contact and once a minor outbreak occurs?

Dino, all joking aside, in NO way do I blame you in ANY manner for this. The ride was EPIC, and as others have stated, i'd do it again in a heartbeat.

If not treated with Tecnu (or Mugwort) within a few hours of initial contact and it's spottie, go get some Zanfel sold at most pharmacies. It's around $35.00. The last time I got some at Rite Aid, I noticed a Rite Aid generic right next to it with the same exact ingredients for about $10.00 less. Not an inexpensive option but it's the only one that can kill PO after infection. It's worth it, trust me!

A cheap alternative for removing the dreaded oak oils. I've heard that rubbing hand sanitizer on exposed skin helps too. Hmmmm....might have to add a small bottle to my Camelbak.
