Exclamation I Taw a Putty Tat .. I Did.. I Did

Was riding El Morro around 5:30PM Friday (today) descending "I think I can" at a pretty good clip when I spooked a big animal

I was near the bottom past where the trail takes a hard right hand turn onto a steep section just before it starts to level out, probably a couple hundred yards before it intesects with "El Moro Canyon" when something big jumped out on the trail about 20 yards ahead of me and started pounding hard down the middle of the trail. At first I thought it was just a coyote or a bobcat, I've seen them in the park many times, and I was just going to ride down behind it. But it only took an instant to realize this was a bigger and much more powerful animal and may certainly have been a mountain lion He (she), ran about 20 to 30 yards down the trail and hopped off to the left, down the gully between El Moro Canyon and "I think I can". I wasn't feeling particularly heroic (being solo) so I beat a motivated retreat up the trail in the opposite direction.

I tried to report the sighting to the ranger, but he was just finishing his shift and I think he was anxious to get home. I'll try again tomorrow. Probably some good tracks left behind.

So watch out you guys and gals, dusk and dawn are probably the most likely times for these encounters of the furry kind. ( I watch Animal Planet ;-)

They were out early this afternoon with all the overcast weather and this low pressure moving in.

Around 4:40 PM Piranha and I were on Chaney Trail on the way up to Sunset Single Track when a big old Tom bobcat came off the cliff to our right, and dissappeared down the canyon in a flash. Both of us looked at each other, and said "CAT!" and kept on riding. That bobcat cleared the width of the road in one leap, just touching down in the middle and off he went. He was a fat looking bobcat, I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if he sneaks in a little deer every now and then for supper.
