Oregon faves?

If any of you can recommend a handful of must-do trails or areas to hit up, please reply.

I searched STR for threads on Oregon trails and didn't come up with much. NOT looking for BC-style free-ride park stuff, but just nice clean XC single-track in beautiful locations. I will be car-camping through much of the state in July and am bringing the mtn bikes. Places near good camping would be ideal.

Oregon is a big state, so I don't know which part you'll be visiting, but down south, near Grants Pass is a trail along the Rogue River called Return of the Jedi. Definitely a must-do rolling singletrack. There are also many trails on and around Mt. Ashland, which is right over the California border on the 5. Haven't done much up north, although there is plenty. I've read a few articles about the Hood River Trail and from what I hear, it's a must-do. You might want to try the trails section on mtbr.com.

MTBR Oregon has some very friendly people on it.
We will be heading that way July 12th to the 27th.
Oakridge and the Alpine trail is a must.
I found Bend to be dry and dusty. Why ride in that when you can shoot over to MacKenzie!
Go on-line and check out some books too.
Hood river is really hard to top. Surveyors Ridge and Dog River. Google them!
You'll be blown away! Oregon is my favorite place to vacation on the mtn. bike!

Metolius-Windigo is listed in the March '08 issue of Bike Magazine as a "Pro's Pick". The description makes it sound enticing. They say it flanks the Three Sisters Wilderness in the Cascade Mountains. The "trail legend" symbols show the trail to be "fast & flowy" and have "lung busting climbs" and "epic views". Me, if I was going to Oregon with my bike, this would be one of the places i'd look into.

Order up Treadmaps' "Oakridge, Waldo Lake & Local Areas" & "North Umpqua River Trail & Local Areas" maps and start planning your trip.

Tracy and I had a great Oregon trip in September '06. We rode the North Umpqua River Trail, a number of trails around Oakridge, and Ape Canyon/Plains of Abraham at Mt. St. Helens, Washington.

The North Umpqua River Trail is a must-do. We did a shuttle-assisted point-to-point ride from Lemolo Lake to Toketee Lake, which includes the most awesome "Dread & Terror" segment. Definitely one of the top three most scenic, fun and memorable rides we've ever done. Call Bill or Sharon at 541-496-3333 to arrange an inexpensive shuttle.

The Oakridge area is chock full of awesome rides. The Alpine trail, part of the Cascade Cream Puff route, is an excellent ride to do as a loop starting & finishing at the covered bridge in Westfir. Larison Rock is a fun, relatively easy & short loop that is perfect if you're short on time. Middle Fork is an amazing ride that can be done in its entirety as a monster, shuttle-assisted, point-to-point, or a medium length out-and-back - Butcherknife to Sacandaga. Waldo Lake is another must-do. I recommend parking at Shadow Bay boat ramp and starting out on the Betty Lake Trail. Take the Betty Lake Trail to the Twins Trail to the summits, then down around Charlton Lake to North Waldo Campground, and finishing by riding the Waldo Lake Trail counterclockwise around the lake back to the boat ramp - around 34 miles of sweet singletrack!

If you're going as far north as Portland, then you shouldn't miss the Ape Canyon / Plains of Abraham ride on Mount Saint Helens. Very unique ride that starts and ends on a flowy singletrack through beautiful old growth forest, but the middle of the ride is all in the volcano's blast zone.

Definitely check out Bend. It's right about smack dab in the middle of the state.

I attended MTB Oregon in 2006 with 11 other guys. By far our favorite trail is "Middle Fork". A mind blowing deep forest flowing single track that from SoCal standards is smooth as silk. A couple of hairy sections, but if you can rock SART, SJT & Noble, this stuff will be sweet cream to ya! We also did the MacKenzie from the Lake all the way to the ranger station. We paid for a shuttle from oregon adventures.com. 26+ miles of 4-8 mph twisty and windy trail thru old growth forest following the river drainage. Some beautiful photo opportunities on the MacKenzie, so take a camera!

For those reading this that wonder about MTB Oregon....... well worth it!!! Ck it out!

Thanks for all of the info...I'll be heading up there in August--there is also some great surfing up there (Oswald State Park). If it wasn't so cold and wet, I'd probably move to Oregon...but it's a great place to visit in the summer
