Earning the downhill
|
So last week I went up to Salt Lake for a quick get-a-way. While surfing MTBR, I came across a thread for a trail build day. I can't tell you how excited I was to see that the City of Draper had approved the build of a new downhill trail. The best part is, its only 20 minutes away from my house up there. Anyway, with the help of WAFTA, the city approved the trail layout and construction started Friday night. A crew went in and did the rough cut with chainsaws. Saturday morning 30 volunteers showed up and made tremendous progress. Hopefully with a some more turnouts like that, the trail will be ready this summer.
The trail we worked on is 1 of 2 that are planned. This one is a very flowy intermediate trail. There will be a few obstacles, but it is mainly a fast trail. The second trail will be slower and more technical. There is still a lot of work to be done on the first trail, so it will be a while before the second trail is started. We started building around 9:00 a.m. and went to noon. Most of the work consisted of digging up roots and tree stumps. I was so sore the next day but it was well worth it. I gave up a day of snowboarding at Snowbird for this, but I would much rather have a killer downhill to ride this summer than a day of slushy spring snowboarding. THE FIRST GROUP TO ARRIVE STEVE FROM WAFTA, THE MAN IN CHARGE THE CITY OF DRAPER PROVIDED ALL THE NECESSARY TOOLS ![]() Making our way down to the trailhead The entrance After we were done, we had a raffle at the top for some prizes donated by Gravity. Lucky me, I won a new Gravity jersey. I met some cool people, contributed to a soon to be sick trail and walked away with some new threads. All in all, a pretty good weekend.
