Default Old Man Riding: San Clemente View Ride

Twelve of us gathered on a warm Saturday morning yesterday to ride a new loop that the Jedi master of San Clemente (Reed) had put together. He had promised not new singletracks but fireroads and a mellow pace. Sounded good for such a hot day.

Gene even turned up to see us off and check out my new Pivot. What a guy! He also had a new tattoo to show off. A hammerhead shark (because we all know he liked to hammer!) which would hopefully take some pain away from his broken rib.

As we headed out of the lot most if us had no idea what kind of ride we were in for.

ReedsRide_002.jpg

Well it turned out to be about 13 miles and 2200' of climbing. Mostly fireroad but some singletrack, but fabulous views along the way. Another nice thing is this loops makes for a great social ride as you can ride side by side and chat and catch up with your buds as you ride. Something you definitely cant do at SCST!

Here's the Geoladders route info.

All was going well until Reed (in the lead) endo'ed and dislocated his shoulder. OMR did a rider down report. It's here.

Uh-oh why is everyone off their bikes?

ReedsRide_011.jpg
We hear that Reed has gone down. He endoed and dislocated his shoulder. Ouch!

ReedsRide_012.jpg
OMR turns away while the guys (background) try to re-set Reed's dislocated shoulder.

After an unsuccessful attempt to re-set the shoulder, Reed who was determined to not have his fall end the ride, gave me directions to lead the rest of the ride. Meanwhile while we continued on, one rider bolted back to the cars to get a vehicle to retrieve Reed and another rider stayed with Reed.

We continued on feeling bad for our buddy Reed but having fun a fun ride nonetheless. But the climbing was far from over. There was a good mix of ups and downs though with some fun fast downhill sections.

Finally when we got back to Pico a couple of the Camelbak-less riders were out of water so we pulled off the trail to re-water. But then we just decided to share water from riders with extra since we were only a few miles from the cars. After a little searching we finally found the last trail that led us back to the cars.

Since it was so hot by then, none of us opted for extra credit in the SCST but decided to head to Pizza Port instead. Other than Reed's fall it was a great ride. Get better fast Reed!

I see you guys rode by the mouth of the storm drain, If you had lights you could of taken the sub-urban rout to stay out of the heat. Its kinda fun the first time.

Damn I just missed you guys.

Smitty let me know when you want to lead an SCST ride. I love it out there.

A few years back I used to ride that area every week before discovering the SCST.

There is also a fireroad that will take you to the Dana Point Hills trails. You can make a hellava training loop!

Yeah I was guessing that would be possible. Thanks for bringing that up.
