Elvia- The thought of TARA BOMBING down the Fontana DH course scares me.... It has TURNS!!!

Besides, Julia AND Tara are smack-talking machines! Between the two of them, I would never get a word in edgewise.

P.S.- Julia is going to make us RICH someday (by racing and destroying the men she competes with).... Uh, what I meant to say was... Never Mind!

Default for sure...

The fireroad to the water tower is SUPER mellow (in terms of technicality) it just a long sustained climb. As for 7th street, my perception might be skewed since I'm new to it so let someone else chime in on that. I also heard that there's lots of other options there as well.
Come out after work and avoid traffic!

amen to avoiding the traffic. i will have to set it up and pm you on that ride....

thanks...

Thanks. I usually just ride the fireroard after work when there's lot's of people (safety first). I get off at 4 but by the time I actually get home (gotta love traffic), my bike, and changed it's usually ~5:30pm by the time I get there. The days I ride vary (except not usually Mondays or Thursdays) since I go whenever I can't bring myself to going to the gym yet AGAIN and just need to get a workout in. Anyone interested in a workout is welcomed to join me on the fireroad. A couple times up and down usually takes a bit over an hour and for me burns 800 calories!

good job tara, thats not an easy thing to do since most people (myself included) tend to drop into a granny gear if available.

from a female perspective, how hard is Turnbull to ride for a that has never mountain biked at all?

Well, the fireroad isn't bad at all technically, but it kind of depends on the fitness of the rider and how much she likes (or dislikes) to push herself physically. I could see how if I didn't like climbs, the fireroad would seem like it went on fooooorever and wouldn't be much fun since its so sustained, it just keeps on going up! The reward doesn't come until the very end, no flat parts or mini descents on the way up to rest. It was really tough for me my first time but I enjoyed it after making it up since it gave me a sense of accomplishment. If you take a gal on the fireroad, just go REALLY slow, and let her think she's kicking your ass up (haha, worked for me).

As for 7th street, NOOOOOOOOOO, DON'T DO IT! Haha, it might scare someone away from mtbing if they've never been. My first time, I had to walk the entire way down and about 1/2 of the way up. Not fun at all! BUT it was nice knowing what to expect. So I would suggest to hike that with her first, it's gorgeous down in the canyon and that way she can judge for herself when she's ready. I am still not fully completely ready/proficent enough for it but I'm going to keep practicing until I am. I know, personally (and from what girls I've talked to about this), we like to know exactly what to expect. I like a trail better the more familar I am with it. No surprises, thank you!

Hope that helps.

Gear question: Are those the 661 Veggie Shin wraps you're wearing? How do you like them?

Yes, they are and I LOVE them! Granted, I don't have much experience with other brands. I was looking for something to protect my calves from my flesh-shredding-pedals and they do that pretty well, I already have a hole on the side in the neoprene (?) (which would have been a pretty nasty wound had I not been wearing them)! It's like instant confidence when I put them on! They do get pretty sweaty but I don't think you can avoid that and I don't mind since I don't notice until I take them off. Overall, I really like them.

while waiting on my ridding buddy (you know who you are, show yourself!) this morning, I decided to do a quick loop up the fireroad and down the Friend's Street singletrack, but decided to go up in the middle ring as fast as I could. I'm normally just a spinner who sits back.

that said, i know i said congrats before, but seeing how you just started riding, that's quite a feat. I was pooped.

Default Question

What is the middle ring at Turnbull? Is it the switch backs (The one with the great wall) after 7th Ave.

I think she meant she climbed Turnbull in the middle chain ring.

So I rode middle ring at turnbull yesterday. It was pretty tough but once I made it to the top it felt great to know I was able to do it. I was just wondering how fast you guys are climbing up? I timed my self and it took me 20 min and 14 sec. to get to Y in the fire rode and I made it to the top of the 3 b***hes in a total time of 30 min and 20 seconds. I know thats pretty slow but I'm just curious to know how quickly some of you guys climb it.
