I can upon a young mountain lion on my ride early this morning. I was on the double track that climbs between the Sage Trail and water tank at the top of the Paved Ranch Center Rd. I see a lot of bob cats, maybe one a month, and didn't realized that this was not one utill I was maybe 50 ft away. It was trotting up the trail the same direction as me and since the grass and weeds are pretty high right now I couldn't get a good look at it at first. Like I said bob cats are pretty routine and I can ussually get close if I stay quiet, but as this one turned when it heard me I could clearly see it had rounded, black tipped ears and a thick tail about as long as it's body. It was about the same hight as a bob cat but thiner and without out the pointy ears and bobbed tail. When I realized what it was and that is was young enough to maybe have a momma around I felt the hair stand up on the back of my neck. The cat took off into the bushes and I slowly turned around and hightailed it down hill back the way I had come.

I do that double track when I do Sycamore and it is the only place in the canyon where I start thinking heavily about the lions. I know they could be anywhere but I expect to see them there for some reason!

Sometimes the lion gets a meal too. Just when you least expect it, he's hiding nearby looking for another meal.

Not this time, there is a Wood Canyon in Sycamore (Pt Mugu) too. That said, if there are deer running around, there could always be a big cat lurking nearby.

There is a Sycamore Canyon in every county of every state in the USA.
This was in LA County up by Ventura. Not the Sycamore in OC, or SD or any other county in CA.

Just throw all of your spare bike frames at them. That will scare the predators away...

Two weeks ago on a mid week evening ride up and down Northridge @ CHSP two of the riders in our group saw a young mountain lion (They were a bit ahead of us on the ride out). The sighting was more towards the bottom on Northridge. They are out there as we all should know.
