Default Makawao Forest, Maui

I wanted to celebrate 35 wedding anniversary in a big way by taking a trip to Maui. I thought I was pretty cool, thinking of something this big for my wife. So last December we made the reservations and we were set to go. A few days before our departure, I realized it is our 34 and NOT 35! She just cracked up, she knew the whole time it was our 34! We had a great time. I just need to come up with something really big next year!

We got in some ride time in the Makawao Forest. What a beautiful place. The tree cover was so thick my gps didn't get a consistent signal, but we did a little over 9 miles with about 1200 feet of climbing. The temps were in the mid 70s. Mostly sunny with a little rain blowing in with the trade winds.

We started off with a steep downhill and then a steep uphill on wet, leaf covered asphalt.
IMG_1070rs.JPG

After a little less than a mile, we picked up the trail.

There's some free ride stuff here, but I stuck to the fun cross country stuff.

A little of an alpine feel near the high end of the trail

And a bit of speed

Some areas have a real tropical feel with giant ferns

I love this place

Sweet RR!
I've traveled to Big Island a number of times in the past few years, and now that i'm recently back into MTBing, have wondered what it's like riding in Hawaii. Thanks for the RR and photos.

Default One more photo...

The trails are great, but we really enjoyed taking our time to enjoy this land. There is a table on the East Loop and one on the West Loop that make excellent places for a stop. Here we stopped on the East Loop for a bite, at the edge of a gorge.

Thanks for the pics and RR. I've hiked there a few times and it is a special place. I would love to go back with a bike.

Yup, it's in The Collective and the jumps are still there. I got to hit them last year.

That's awesome. Way to celebrate 34 years.

My wife and I just celebrated 9 months. I guess we have some catching up to do. We also just bought last minute tickets to Maui on Monday. We leave Sunday. Did you rent bikes there or bring your own? I think I'm going to have to add mountain biking to our list of planned adventures.

Very nice! As impressive as Maui and surrounding trails are, I'm far more impressed by your 35...oops, I mean, 34 years of marriage! That's a huge feat and rarely heard of now-a-days!
Now since you've set the bar so high, you really need to reach into your bag of tricks to top this one on your 35th. Not to mention what you have to do for your 40th or dare I mention, 50th! Congratulations to the both of you!

Reedster, we rented from Island Biker. http://www.islandbikermaui.com/rentals.asp

They were just a little more expensive than some other shops, but they have Specialized bikes. My wife has ridden specialized bikes for a few years now, and up to a few months ago, I have too. So it is what we are use to.

We walked in and rented bikes so we didn't have the choice of bike models, BUT we still had some good bikes. My wife rode an Endro Comp ($75), I had a FSR Pro ($50). Both bikes were in excellent condition. Its a 24 hour rental, so by going mid-day you wouldn't need to bring it back until mid-day, the next day, getting a couple of days worth of riding. We also rented a bike rack for our rental car ($10). The shops in the area have maps to the area we rode. The only thing I would've done different is to call ahead and reserve the bikes.

I hope you two have a great time!

JoeTruth, Its a little scary to try to top this trip, but I got a year to think about it!

SnookDawg, See my response to Reedster. You can do a search for "Maui" and there is info in other threads about other shops.

......it's happening to me in reverse. We're heading out to the River tomorrow for our 21st. Mrs. keeps reminding me that it's our Big 2-0. There's no chance I'm falling for that, but I'll still make it special.

Great photos – looks like you all had a great time…
A lot of people don’t realize that Makawao is a big time cowboy town.
They have a really great rodeo in the summer time. The wife and I usually
drive up to Makawao for dinner at the steak house, plus the Mexican
restaurant has a great deal (cheap) if you hit it up for happy hour.
They have a saying: “Eat here so we both don’t starve “
