Default Laguna wilderness today....

I seriouslly looked at every rock on the trail, on our ride today. (head was down) The uphill came RIGHT out of the gate, was not to prepared for that one, but took it easy, and before you knew it, we were looking at the 73 on top of the hill. Lots of snakes out, along with lots of SUN!!

Well, here's the question. Bad headache after the ride, ran out of water half way through (90oz) Headaches are common with dehydration, right?? I certainlly hope so. It went away this afternoon after I chugged some water. I have downed 3/4 of a gallon since 1, and no bathroom trip in site.

So, sunny day, lots of climbing....water only??? Or supplement with some water, and mix (heed, cytomax) I do not asorb water quickly, and gels do not work so well for me. Any suggestions?? Thanks!

ps: here's some pics, before hell began for me.....

You got dehydrated dude.Headache is likely from the heat. It hasn't been hot like today in a while. Sounds fun anyway. Did you go with Dutch and John? Start drinking water now for the deathmarch in may

Yeah, John and Dutch. Lots o' climbing.....lots o' snakes! John startled a small rattler, and it totally coiled on him! Gnarly... six years riding, and not a single snake sighting, and then 4 on one ride!

Hot days like this will catch you off guard. You want to chug lots(about a gallon) the night before and on the way there(about 20 ounces) and about every 15 minutes of riding(a good swig or two from a bottle or camelback). I don't drink as much as I should. Not water at least. I was fishing all day at Bonelli and am super dehydrated right now. Only brought one bottle of water.

I always get headaches when I strain myself too much in heat. If you hydrate enough you wont' get a headache.

here's another thought- you could be over hydrated.

people- if you're sweating you're not only giving off water- you're also giving off salt. you've got to replace that somehow as well.

any electrolyte drink will do. heck, trail mix does as well, but obviously it doesn't get into your system as quick.

to the OP- if you run out of water, you should have been monitoring the amount better- did you keep riding or b-line it back to the car once you discovered that you had no water?

stay safe, people- dehydration ain't fun.

Yes, be very careful about chugging water after a long rides, it can be dangerous if you don't also replace the electolytes you have lost.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_intoxication

Nasty thing about it is, the initial symptoms mimic dehydration and causing you to think you need more water.

I have found that drinking V8 before and after rides helps me alot. Regular V8 is loaded with a ton of sodium and potasium. I got caught off guard on saturday and got cooked pretty good. Didn't run out of water but the heat definitely affected my riding.

I also get bad headaches from tensing the muscles in my neck and shoulders too much on long XC rides. I have to constantly remind myself to relax on hard climbs.

Gotta go with darklands closely followed by psycho candy. All of it is great though. The barbed wire kisses release of the b sides is a fave too. Everything is alright when you're down is one of their best songs. You a fan too? I was front and center for the reunion show at the glasshouse last year. Never thought I'd ever see them play again.

I was parked opposite your car yesterday and yes it was hot as hell. I had my ass handed to me going down T&A then crossed over and made it worse by trying to go down some other gnarly trail.

Also, I emptied my camelback yesterday too. It was freakin hot.

I've got the sound of speed usa and the japanese version. i'm a bit of a collecter with their stuff. I love the cover of guitarman on that one.
Glad to see you're a fan. The heat yesterday was rough for sure. I'll have to ride with you soon K dog.

Yeah it was super hot out. Saturday wasn't so bad.

Yeah I like them a lot. I kind of gave up after Jim started seeing that Hope chick. It all seemed to go down hill at that point. But what can you do? I love the version of Sugarcube's Birthday they did. Nice one. Are you into Spacemen 3?

Haven't heard too much spacemen 3. I'll need to check them out. If you like the classic JAMC sound check out a band called A place to bury strangers. They capture the early JAMC sound very well. they are a new band. I'm also a big fan of Ride. I love most early 90's shoegaze stuff.
K dog, How'd the other guys do in the heat?

Yeah, I went down the same way....missing link, I think. It was like 15 Five Oaks rolled into one. I had way too many oh sh@t moments on that trail!

naw ken you had your oh sh@t moments on laguna ridge / T&A, missing link and fenceline were the nice flowy singletracks we hit up top.

I guess while on the subject, here's what works for me (ignore the fact that I'd totally guzzled a ton of beer before our ride).

Plenty of salt and protein in my dinner before, I know its crappy, but I've been into rice a roni (small amount) before a long ride, plenty of sodium and carbs, and then some meat to go with it. I think i had a bagel with fried egg and bacon before our ride. in the morning, a pepsi, boosts my energy real quick, I chase that with a couple of glasses of water, and then, as brent says, take a nice big swig every 15 minutes or so, or when I notice my saliva getting thick.

I'm sure you were probably nowhere near overhydrating, you were sweating plenty and I think you just underestimated the (fun of the) ride.

I'm up in T.O. right now and hitting simi tomorrow for my fourth ride in six days, hellllls yeah!

Kdog, if you know you're going to ride lots in the heat, definitely start pre-hydrating a day or even 2 days before. Monitor yourself by the color of your Pee. Clear and Copius. Having a little gatorade or some other electrolyte drink the night before isn't bad idea either.

While riding make sure you have somekind of electrolyte replacement drink as well as water. Motortabs aren't a bad thing to carry in your camelback. As you can just pop it into your bladder if you need it.

Probably should start a thread about riding in the heat. I know there's one in the archives...
