Default CAUTION on Sunset

Rode the Lower Merrill to El Prieto loop, from JPL this morning. Only my 3rd time on it, a fantastic loop, so I'm still iffy with the trail names. I'm not much of a "RR" guy, so I'll get to the point.

The trail that connects Lower Merrill with Sunset; I thinks its Sunset(??), well if you're heading from the Lower Merrill to Sunset (east to west), around the 1/4 mark, the trail is 90% collapsed. Sketchy for riders and hikers alike. The Rangers were out conducting rehab and marking the section. They said it should be rebuilt within the next week.

Exercise caution... It can be disastrous for anyone not familiar with the area, or someone bombing it at night.

p.s. their was a homie with a fruit cart at the JPL parking lot, NICE! Got a mango on a stick doused with lemon juice and pico-de-gallo, mmmmmm... Asked the compadre if he had any bacon-wrapped-hotdogs; no luck, maybe next time. LA County Rocks!

Damn those are good. Hollywood night clubbing always ends with one of those bacon dogs for me. Never got sick off one yet.

Aldo glad you are enjoying that loop...it is a good one. Sounds like Echo Mt. Single Track. That section has seen a few trail colapses.

OOOOOHHH - Dog-dogs from TJ? Now that brings back some memories of tequila and club Bambi (i.e. hot strippers - got kicked in the head real hard by one once. Yah, I deserved it). Ahhh, good times indeed. Sorry for getting off topic....

That has been there for a while now. It is rideable just don't look down! Don't sue me if you try to ride it and fail

The Ranger you saw was probably Mark Gage. He is actually a Forest Volunteer not a Ranger. Anyway he is a Mountain Biker and maintains the Lower Sam Merrill trail pretty much single handed!

If you volunteer for trail work I can get you one of those cool Forest Service uniforms too! Just think of the chicks you can get with that uniform on!

We had one of our OTB riders go down there... fortunately, about 40 feet down the slope there's a retaining wall. That's what caught him. Dale is in his 60's so it was quite the adventure for him... I usually ride it, but I'm glad to hear it's being worked on. One clip of the handlebars on that rock, and you'll be thankful for the retaining wall below too....

I fourth the notion that it's the Echo Mountain Trail you're talking about. That washout is ridable provided you approach it with a little momentum and fully commit. If you're not feelin' it, hike it instead!

Yeah, there have been several washouts there. Some of those retaining walls have been in place since the 1920's so it was sad to see them damaged. At least the damage was done by Mother Nature's forces and not careless vandals.

I need to post the picture I have from an Incycle XC Race I did a couple years back where one of the dudes with the bike fruit cart was cruising around the XC course while racers were zooming by him. LOL.

I missed the ride that night that Dale went off the side! I did not realize it was on the Echo Mountain trail where he went off! I thought he went off on the Lower Merrill! Man he is lucky he did not get hurt on that one!

One of our guys went down on sunday. Minor fall, although he did break his lever. I also saw the guy with the fruit cart.
