Default RR: Another from the San Gabes...but short

Situation: I have to drive from HB to Pasadena mid day to attend the Family Winemakers Tasting.

Problem: Traffic is going to be bad.

Solution: Leave early and ride Mt. Lowe; what else???

So I meet up a buddy of mine, Tom Martinez, a person whom some people on this board know, but he still hasn't logged on as a user (ba$tard). Anyways, we meet at JPL at 8:30am. The mornings aren't as cold there as they have been, so spring is really here. By the time we get up to the drop off point, we peel off a layer, as the temps are now hitting the 70s. Here's a pic from the drop off point...not a bad view.

There has been a lot of work done on the FR up, especially past the tunnel, where there has been a HUGE pile of rocks building up from numerous landslides for years right at the end of the tunnel. Those of you who ride here know what I'm talking about. There's still a bit of snow as you climb up to Mt. Lowe, but when you get to the top, it clears up. Here's a look at your first bit of downhill:

We did not come across one soul the entire day. Here's Tom makin' this off camber rock section on Middle Merrill look easy. Speed is your friend, look to his right and take note of the penalty for failure...it's not pretty.

This rock has a pretty good lip that can send you over. Here's pic #1 of a sequence of yours truly:

And here's #2. You hit this with a bunch of speed; look at the distance from take off to landing!!!

Well, sorry, but that's all the pics I have. Sunset and El Prieto got too much fun to stop. It was uneventful, other than getting whacked by my seat on a certain part of my body where my bathing suit covers and me dropping to the ground and screaming in pain, nauseous for 15 minutes. Tom actually got that on video; I'll post that as soon as he downloads it. I'm sure it's pretty funny!

There has been a lot of work on the trails, and we should all thank those who have done this. Sunset is pristine, and water crossings on El Prieto are not much heavier than they normally are.

Can't wait to go there again...maybe after the Marshall Canyon ride this Saturday.

Good to see people enjoying the trailwork we did two weeks ago. Always fun... and it is a challenge to take photos.

Time for a helmet cam run.... is approaching, I believe!

Is that T. Martinez, class of 82 from John Muir down the street, do you know? If so, tell him Joe said "hey!". He used to have a sweet white '67 Mustang w/ a 289 we loved to ride around in.

I didn't think he'd still have it. After all, that was 26-27 years ago.
After all these years and both of us riding, I'm surprised I've never run into him out and about.

Tom makes the whole wilson ride from top to bottom look easy. Proj_D is no slouch either.
