I did a solo ride yesterday morning before I started in my drunken stooper of the St. Paddys day pub crawl.
I ran over this poor guy. I know he is not a rattler but still it scared the shait out me. I think he was ok.

Too bad you ran over him, and unless you bunny hopped it's probably
not doin' too well. Snakes don't bother me anymore. I stop and check them out.... then make sure to get them off the trail. |

I saw two rattlers in Aliso last Thursday.
The first was on Cholla - nothing like hearing a rattle when suffering up a hill. It was just off to the side but coiled up and pissed. The second one was on the fireroad out by the main gate, kinda by the cave rock trail. Luckily I saw it crossing the road in time to move out of the way, but still, not something I wanted to see.

I'm guessing you haven't had a pair of fangs rammed into your leg, followed by an hour of excruciating pain and nausea, followed by 3 days in the ICU, followed by 8 weeks of intensive rehab to regain lower extremity strength and coordination, followed by a 6 month restriction on any biking activity, followed by nightmares and panic attacks causing you to lash out at night and repeatedly beat on your wife's arm because that thing looks like a fricken' sidewinder coming to get you?

Sidewinders are my absolute favortie local snake, alot of people have been hit by them because they dish themselves in the sand and you dont see them. Did they use cro-fab anti venom or the old stuff??? the old stuff is almost as bad as the envemonation
Hopefully you hit that gopher near its rear end and it will be fine. I found a lawnmowered southern pacific at work today talk about ruining a good day I almost back over a few lawn mowers on the way out just for retaliation Quote:

I didn't say it had actually happened to me either...I just mean that it would probably suck if it did.

I respect the serpent!! Remember it was the serpent that caused Eve to screw things up for everybody!!! My lighting speed was too much for my cat like reflexs so unfourtaintly I ran the thing over.

I get paid to work with reptiles , its kind of what i do, i dont Id correct 100% of the time on some snakes but its defintly is a gopher,
didnt i post the snakes you are mosty likely to encounter thing already? check out http://www.californiaherps.com/ if you ever need to id a reptile in Cali most of them are on there, the three most common rattle snakes around our , Southern Pacfics, Crotalus virdis helleri, Red Diamond, Crotalus ruber ruber, and the Speckled rattlesnake Crotalus mitchellii. If you are in south eastern california you may enocunter, western diamondbacks, Crotalus atrox. And up in dez of course you have the sidewinder Crotalus creastes , and the famed mojave green, Crotalus scutulatus the southern pacfic and red diamond are the most common encountered and the southern pacific has the highest number of envenomations.
