I had a rattler strike my bike while I was riding in Mission Trails. I screamed like a bitch and bailed and lost a shoe in the process. The damn thing was curled up in my fallen bike. My buddy had to lasso the bike with a bike tube and drag it over and the snake slithered away, hissing and rattling at us the entire time. I hate snakes.

I saw a few tracks at El Moro the other day for the first time this year but luckily nothing that was alive and up close and personal but beware, they're waking up and the weather is calling 'em ouit. I spook easy and I like to see them but I also respect them enough to not want to be close enough to one that's pissed off like the day I was hiking in Riley *shiver*.

o i forgot to say anything but it was bugging me ,the 3 days in icu from a sidewinder would be ridiculous they have the least potent venom of any rattlesnake in Cali it would still suck but is not really as "life threating" you would have some nasty tissue damage though.

Jman yeah i am a sick man you should see the new snake rack i just build to hold my new arrivials

PS if anyone finds a boa and would like to tell me the approx location that would be awsome they are my all time favorite snake around I love seeing them in the wild

my coworker that i was talking about earlier is a huge rosey fan. he was a collector until his son was born (apparently they can carry salmonella). he was telling me earlier about some great snake spots in sd county. i'll ask him tomorrow about good rosey spots.

Saw rattler relaxing on the trail in the hills behind San Clemente last Friday. He was just chillin, but since I was climbing I wasn't too stoked to see him.

Pitouphus catenifer a close relative of the Bull Snake in the midwest, and the Pine snake in the South east.

Not to preach guys, but please, ride in control, at a speed where you can avoid and miss these guys sunning themselves in the trails. It's mating season for them, and we've already encroached on so much of their area with new home developments.

check out http://www.californiaherps.com/ if you ever need to id a reptile in Cali most of them are on there, the three most common rattle snakes around our , Southern Pacfics, Crotalus virdis helleri, Red Diamond, Crotalus ruber ruber, and the Speckled rattlesnake Crotalus mitchellii.
If you are in south eastern california you may enocunter, western diamondbacks, Crotalus atrox. And up in dez of course you have the sidewinder Crotalus creastes , and the famed mojave green, Crotalus scutulatus

the southern pacfic and red diamond are the most common encountered and the southern pacific has the highest number of envenomations.

Thanks RockintheCasbah for the link...I finally identified a snake I accidentally rode over in the grass/mud of a trail in the Cleveland NF two years ago while training for DH. It was up near the famous Noble Canyon Trail and turns out to be a Mountain King Snake! So stoked and pretty sure it lived but will never know as I tried to find it and was unsuccessful. Would have loved to make sure it was ok and take some pics. Maybe if I hike back and forth on the trail repeatedly...? Happy snake sightings to all.

I love snakes. The bite of a non-venomous snake really doesn't hurt much. I'd rather get bit by a snake than a dog.

Rick, what kind of snakes are you keeping at home? I may have to come over and visit them.

Not snappy...I was joking. I thought the part about beating the $%^# out of the wife's arm was a giveaway. I'll try to be more clear with my jokes.

A horse walked into a bar and the bartender says, "Hey...why the long face?"

We saw a medium sized rattler at El Moro a couple of weeks ago. My friend bunny hopped it and yelled snake, I was able to stop and watch it pass over the trail.
