Ted and I decided to explore a different route to get to out usual singletrack descent. We shuttled up to a turnout near the entrance to the lake to get out of climbing that busy stretch of road.
There was still plenty of climbing just to get to where the pavement ended. 1- This is looking back to the west along Lake Hughes Rd. about 6 miles up from town. If you look closely in the upper left you can see a white dot. That is the water tower that is about 200 yeards up at the end of my street. ![]() 2- This is (in the background) where we turned off of Lake Hughes Rd. and onto 5N30. After a mile on 5N30, we turned right onto 5N17 to climb up to where I took this pic. ![]() 3- Looking down at the junction of 5N30 and 5N17 (where we came from). ![]() 4- Ted climbing. ![]() 5- After some more climbing, we were looking down into San Fransquito Canyon near where the St. Francis dam collapsed 1n 1928. ![]() 6- A bit of a descent, followed by..... more climbing. ![]() 7- Looking south toward the entrance of San Francisquito Canyon with the San Gabriel mountains in the left background and the Santa Susana mountains in the right background. The low spot back there is where the I-5 goes over the Newhall Pass. ![]() 8- There were several little spurs off of the main road and Ted was compelled to explore several of them. ![]() 9- This one 50 yard stretch had several clumps of these pink wildflowers. ![]() 10- Another spur exploration. Ted had got to this point once before by himself and dropped down into the beginning of Charlie Canyon here. He was treated to a few hours of HAB to get to where he could ride out the far end back near town. ![]() 11- Where's Waldo, err... Ted? You can see him in the dirt spot out at the end of the trail. ![]() 12- Here he is...heading up to where was in the previous pic. Love that 10x zoom! ![]() 13- ![]() 14- A large chunk-o-dirt. ![]() 15- A much larger chunk-o-rock. ![]() 16- Looking east down onto an OHV staging area heading into San Francisquito Canyon. ![]() 17- And away he goes on another spur... ![]() 18- A little further and we get to where we have a good view looking to the west down into Charlie Canyon. Our descent lies a couple more canyons to the left of this one. ![]() 19- We eventually make it to the top of the Tapia Canyon singletrack. This looking back toward where we cam from. That large rock formation is the same one in #15, just from a different angle. ![]() It was nice to get and try something new to us and was a decent workout to boot. About 18.5 miles altogether followed immediately by a #17 from Casa Lupita! Thanks for looking. |

Looks like a great ride, good write up. When my new ride gets here I will have to head on over there for a ride, as well as a lot of other spots.

Nice Pics!
How far are you from the Castaic Race Course? Team BB used to host a race there every year as a part of the SoCal Series. I think last year was the last year.

In the first pic of this thread, the ridge that is just above the far end of the lake is where the top of the XC climb lies. The entrance to that area of the park is about 2+ miles from my house. That used to be my primary ride in this area, but since I've discovered my current favorite area, I have spent very little time on those trails. |

Nice there, Jeff. I'm just down the road a ways in Granada. Sometime if you want to do a weekday ride, anytime, PM me and let's set it up.
Been a while since we did Keyesville together last November.

Great pics! Pic 9 Ted's saddle is looking pretty tall for him or maybe his leg looks stretched out because of the angle of the pic. Looks like a great trail system!
