Man, what a great day this was!
We hit the 1st Cal State race today at Bonelli for a day of Super D only (for us) racing. It was Lacey's first race this year, and Jake's first race ever. We road the course yesterday, so the kid's new what to expect. Not much singletrack, and lot's of fireroad. We got there early enough to hit the singletrack section a few more times, to get that first turn down. Jake Lacey The pedal back up was a good warm up, and senic too! We also saw Rachel (Wrecker) up top, and got a chance to pedal around with her for a few minutes. Rachel and Jake before the start. A picture that a MTBing Dad love's to see.... What we didn't expect, was the Lemans start! Eric Beirman is FAST! What a trip that was! They combined 3 catagories into out group; Open Men 18 & Under (Jake) Open Men 30 + Open Men 40 + (me) That put 17 riders on the line for our run to the bikes. ![]() Jake had a really good start, and was able to get down the first section of singletrack in a good position. I wasn't so lucky (or fast). There was a little carnage here and there, but my boy and I were able to both stay on two wheels. Lacey also said she got a good start, and made it down without any incidendts. I passed Jake when it opened up a bit, and hollard at him to pedal hard, and have fun! Once on the fireroad, I felt pretty good, and was able to pass a couple of guy's, and I was also passed by a few. The last climb to the finish made me feel like I was gonna puke! I ended up with 4th place out of 7, in the Open Men 40+, with a time of 9.42. Next in was Jake. He took 3rd place out of 5 in the Open Men 18 & Under, with a time of 12.58. Rachel came flying by next! I got a picture of her finishing, but she was moving so fast, it just came out a blur! Wrecker, she's fast!! Rachel took second in her group, and beat me by 11 seconds!! ![]() Next in was my little girl. Lacey raced alone (again) in her age group, Open Women 18 & Under, took first, and finished with a time of 11.22. In this picture it look's like she was just cruising across the finish line, but believe me, she was pedaling her a$$ off! This is Eric Beirman. Beirman is one fast mofo (he had the fastest time of the day, just over 7 minutes), and a long time Path customer! Wrecker get's her's! Jake on the podium for his first race ever!! Just another day at the races for Lacey. It was GREAT to have her back out there with me!! And this picture speaks a 1000 words! Hope you had a GREAT weekend like I did!

thought this at the demo day a couple weekends ago, so i'll say it here, your son is a spitting image of you
that said, I woke up this morning a little late and regretted not going to bonelli, too tired from yesterday. Probably two of the luckiest kids ever you have there

Congrats! You all did great! I was happy to follow Lacey down the sketchy part, she picks great lines (I think I went a bit faster following her).
MAJOR kudos to Jake. He looked like he had a blast out there, and talking to him you can tell he just LOVES to ride (whether over neighbors, down the stairs, or in a race). He is just another of your awesome kids. You give me too much credit for getting a better time--I couldn't even pick up your bike (it's about 10lbs more than mine, right?), and there was a bit of uphill there--thanks anyway ![]()

At a lot of the bigger races, like the Cal State series, and Nationals, they actually have Junior Beg. classes for the younger kid's. Little Troy Sladeck been racing since he was real little. http://troylikesbikes.com/home.php I know he was racing in age groups with kid's a few years older than him for a long time.(seems like a long time, he's still only 11 years old) I'd say take them out and do some rides with them, then make the rides a little harder each time. If they're having fun, take to a race that will allow you to ride with them durring the race(Donny's good for this at Fontana), and see how they like it. Remember to just always keep it fun. ![]()
