I know of three different ways to ride into Horse Flats. Park at Three Points and take the Silver Moccasin Trail East thru Bandido. Climb up the Silver Moccasin Trail to Horse Flats from Chilao Campground. or a short side trip when you come off Mt. Hilyer. Depends on who you talk to we all seem to have our own way of putting loops together out there. Many call it the Charlton Flats or Chilao figure 8 or the Three Peaks Loop (Mt. Vetter, Mt Mooney and Mt Hillyer). I like that trail but it does not have the back country feel like many other San Gab rides do so I don't ride it as often as some. It has too many campgrounds, paved roads, and houses to feel remote. The LA Sherriff uses Horse Flats for their equestrian training so the trails right around the campsite can get very sandy.

Default horse flats

There's a few great singletracks around horse flats, but all north facing slopes are currently covered in snow.

I seriously thought this thread was a stab at Dino and Iron Horse bikes.

The book "Mountain Biking Southern California's Best 100 Trails" has a great description of a ride through the Chilao/Horse Flats area. It's called "Chilao Three Peaks Loop."

You can probably find that book at your local bike shop. I've seen it for sure at REI.

The book is a bit thick to be taking along on a ride, so I would just photocopy the particular pages you need and take the photocopies with you.

a bit too much snow still (tho both Horse Flats and Silver Moc down to Chilao mostly face south or south east, so they melt out faster.

i hiked/ rode a trail today in the same general vicinity (Perhaps Casual Trucking) that was half hiking cross snow...nice to get out and snow hike, but I really wanted swoopy single-track..

and yea. I started bouldering horse flats in '84 or so.. used to boulder on Mt Pacifico back around '79 or '80.
Black Mountain in '79, too. Did a tad bit of tramway bouldering in '78, but never visited the good stuff until '07.... never done a V10, tho. We used to call stuff um, 11c. 11d.. maybe I could once pull a 12a, which sadly ...checks in around V6?
