Default SJ bizarre ride

well, it started off tame enuff, just glad to be riding....

Ran into Gene at the lower switchbacks....sorry I missed THE real ride...

So, I was trying to get in a rhythm and keep up somewhat with the fast guy ahead of me (EpicRyder) when I see a helicopter off in the distance...

I'm thinking, "Am I back at El Moro, this is weird"...

Turn the corner and the helicopter is following ME!?

Turns out, a guy messed up his Arm and I (we) witnessed a helicopter evacuation. Pretty surreal, wind blowing, small groups separated since the stretcher they dropped down was on the trail, doood screaming just a few feet from me....

I definitely rode a little more carefully after seeing that up close and personal...

Another strange moment occurred when we had the 40 minute delay for the evac, was a guy rode up with a dog in his front basket... When the evac was over, I followed him and his dog (running behind his bike) up to Cocktail rock...

Man, that dog held out for two miles before I had to say, "ON YOUR LEFT" !

I saw the dog, the bike with basket, and the rescue. Klutter, Dubjay, LoisMustDie, Will, and I were coming back from a long ride riding SJ, Viejo tie etc.

But yeah, that guy with the little Yorky on SJT trail was a trip! Hope they don't ride at night. That's cougar food for sure. Life is merrier with a Yorkshire terrier.

Bummer that guy got hurt and had to be airlifted out. It was a sight to see the search and rescue chopper hover over the singletrack trail and pluck the guy and 2 rescuers out using the cable and wench.

Man, that guy had some good friends/people there. I think they walked back down and brought his bike down. They were a good distance from the parking lot.

But we did meet some CrankBros guys at cocktail rock. Supernice guys, and they were showing off those new CB wheels. Cool indeed. Love that anodized orange.

I snapped a couple camera phone shots. I'll try to post'em up soon.

I think the guy that rode down with frame knew the rider. Me and a friend grabbed his wheels and rode down with them. San Juan is pretty fun to ride down one-handed. Still, I think riding with both hands is a little better.

Just heard the details from Brenda via Kristine. Way to be calm and take control of the situation Brenda and Eric!!!

Heard you (Eric) used Brenda's cell to call 911 and also had to guide the copter in while Brenda used her calming mother skills to help the injured party.

It seemed fate had a hand in your guys ride today

Default Hey

Kentonn......thanks for the help!

They guy with the frame didn't know the kid but he was bigger than I and thought it would be best to carry it down instead of me. Bren and I drove the stuff to the kids house and dropped it off. Spoke with his dad at the hosp.....he is doing well.

Today was good....in more ways than one.

Glad to hear the rider was ok-ish. I took a buddy on SJT a long time ago and made him wear a helmet. Half way down he went OTB and hit his head/helmet on a rock but was ok - helmet had a huge ding in it where the pointy side of a boulder woulda left a dent w/gash in his skull. Coulda been waaaay bad if he wasn't wearing it - and this was in the pre-cell phone days when not many people rode the trail....Hats off to all that helped out today!!
Injured rider today will probably feel a lot more pain when he gets the helicopter taxi bill.....ouch!

We saw you guys coming down with everything strapped on your bikes. I hope the kid heals up quick. In addition to all the other strange happenings on the trail today...we finished one of our rides in the dark and had a police officer drive up and ask us if we saw anyone on the trail. We didn't see anyone coming down from cocktail. He said a hiker had called and they were lost and it was getting dark. He said he didn't know the area and wasn't about to go out there in this weather. So I imagine someone is gonna have a cold wet night. Strange day indeed.
