On Friday morning Steve (kanga), Mic (posthole), and Mark (from Decline) met in Keysville to do some riding and check out the conditions. It was cold and foggy at 9 but the clouds burned off by 10. Mic had brought a fleet of bikes so this was going to be an all Bionicon ride.
![]() We started by climbing the fire road to the first saddle and riding down Rocky Gorge Trail. The recent big rains have taken a toll. We had to go slower than normal but it was still fun. Mic and Mark ![]() Steve ![]() Mark ![]() Mic ![]() ![]() We took this down to where it crosses the XC course. It was a little rutted but not bad. This part of the course has a fair amount of climbing on it. The climbs are not sustained but rather short and steep. The short downhill sections in between the climbs go by too quickly and it seems like you are climbing all the time. The steeper parts had ruts in the middle of the trail. I slid out on two of them. The other guys didn't seem to have any problems. Soon we got to the high point of the course. Next was the cool rolling downhill section. This is a great part of the trail. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The huge granite is cool ![]() The boys hooking it up on a few wide switchbacks ![]() ![]() Right after the switchbacks there was a downed tree. We cleared what we could but there still is a good sized oak on the trail. I will need to bring the chainsaw in for that one. When we got back to the trucks we decided to shuttle Dutch Flat so we could give the Supershuttles a real downhill test. I suspected we would hit some snow on the climb and I was right. We slogged through several inches of snow on the North side of the mountain for 40 minutes. It was worth it once we got to the DH part. The trail was pretty tough because of the ruts. About half way down I was going too fast and got caught by one. Thank god I had my knee pads on. I am sore this morning from the wreck. The dirt was damp and the traction was good. No dust. With some work those ruts will get smoothed out. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() After that adventure we went to the back yard to mess around a little. I put a transition on this rock the other day. ![]() ![]() Steve tried it and things didn't go so well. ![]() He went OTB and did a roll. He sprang right back up to his feet like a cat. After that we had had enough. We went up to the brewery for some much earned food and beer. I love that stout. Thanks Steve and Mic for setting this up and letting me abuse one of your bikes. I hope to do it again soon. |

The DH course is not very hard. There is really only one tough section. None of these pictures are of the DH course. We did about 1/2 the XC course plus some other stuff. Pictures 7-13 are all on the course. I guess I was not clear on what we did.

jfsh,
What a great day of riding we had! Thanks for showing up and guiding us through some of the unknown sections that were just a blast to ride. Nice series of pics that you posted. Too bad we don't have one of you going OTB at mach 2 like you did. You lucky lucky man! Can't wait to ride the DH and XC course again in March at the 20th Annual Keyesville Classic. After seeing your riding style, I hope you can compete in the All Mountain Stage Race. See you next time. |

It really was a good time out there yesterday! I'll add a bit to Jeff's already great RR...
We climbed up the fire road to the saddle, and Mic says "we're going up there." We dropped into the climbing position on the Bionicons and all three of us climbed it without dabbing.... GPS reported 35% grade. The photo Jeff posted is coming back down, and doesn't show the grade. This was the reward for that little climb: ![]() Coming down Rocky Gorge: ![]() Some of the swooping of Keyesville Classic trail: ![]() He didn't mention sliding sideways in 4WD on the frozen dirt and snow to get up to the drop-off point for Dutch Flat.... ![]() Slugging it up through the snow.... ![]() Posthole, demonstrating how he got his screen name: ![]() Jeff out ahead.... ![]() Ski-Biking down the north face (of dutch flat): ![]() Two Supershuttles, all in a row.... ![]() Jeff enters the steeps: ![]() Jeff's crash... trying to figure out what happened (the bike is where it was, Jeff landed about 15 feet in front of it): ![]() Three Supershuttles, all in a row: ![]() Fantastic ride... ![]() Then the gravy was playing in Jeff's skill's park... I didn't know he had a camera rolling when I went OTB... It's a tricky, blind, off-camber roller. You can't see the exit until you're missing it. Fun!![]()

Fence isn't really a problem unless you're way off line. If you're offline, one won't make it to that last roller, as it's a pretty tricky section just to get to it. Dirt was nice and soft, but I do have a souvenir.

Today I hauled the saw up to take care of that new fallen tree. When I got there it was already clear. Someone beat me to it. Full report here:

That was the first time since I moved from Colorado that I got to posthole on a bike ride. Such simple pleasures in life!
jfsh, that was only the second time we have ridden together, but I hope there are many more. Can't wait to see where you take us next. You look good on that Supershuttle ![]() |

Great effort trying to clear the oak tree. We tried to move it on Sunday, but it was to heavy. After our ride we ran into a massive group from the Southern Sierra Fat Tire Assoc.- I'm sure they cleared it in prep. for the race. Anyway, Can't wait to ride the Sherman Bike Park again and trash another rear derailleur.

Great job on this shot Jeff... I love the perspective of the size of the granite boulders and contrast in relation to the rider. That picture rocks! Check out the shadow on that rock! Looks like you are bent over, wringing a rattlesnakes neck bare handed!
