Default Stunt High Trail-Santa Monica Mountains

CORBA has received complaints about irresponsible Mountain Bikers on the Stunt High Trail. The trail is located in Stunt Ranch off of Mulholland Highway a few miles west of Old Topanga Road. This trail runs through Mountains Recreation Conservation Authority (MRCA), Mountains Restoration Trust (MRT) and University of California Reserve land. This trail is used as part of an outdoor education area for young kids to learn about the
Native Americans, Plants and Animals.

On 1/27 a group of five riders came down the trail. Four of the five riders were considerate and slowed down as they passed a group of instructors and young kids on the trail. One of the five riders did not slow down at all. The report is that he was out of control and yelled to the group to get out of the way! He nearly missed individuals in the group as he sped passed. After he passed the group he crashed! This apparently was not the first incident like this on this trail.

Now if your kid were out there would you want someone riding this way? If you cannot control your bike go take the free CORBA skills class! All other trail users have the right of way! You slow down to a crawl or stop your bike and walk when you pass a group of hikers! If you know who these riders were please educate them!

This is a trail that is officially closed to bikes though it is not posted or enforced. Now they want to put up signs and have called on Rangers to patrol the area and issue citations to riders that ride the trail.

CORBA is trying to set up a meeting to come up with an alternate solution to closing this trail.

Please do not ride this trail until we can work this out! These are the kinds of incidents where a few people give mountain bikers a bad name and ruin trail opportunities for everybody. Remember your actions on the trail effect us all!

CORBA is working to open more trails in the Santa Monica Mountains to Mountain Bikes. Incidents like these will make these efforts much more difficult!

Please ride responsibly!

Never ridden Stunt Ranch, but have heard about it; seems to be a popular multi-use area, so how dumb do you have to be to ride irresponsibly? Know your surroundings and know your limits and abilities. It you are riding trails where there is a lot of foot traffic, consider slowing things down, don't ride like a wannabe racer. I can imagine the consequences it that rider had plowed into that group of school kids. Not good.

well, people can be stupid... case in point of my last two rides at aliso.. group of three riders coming down the extra credit to the right of lynx... there was a single rider climbing and the three just blew right by him without even slowing down... on tuesday while climbing mathis, some bone head almost ran into me when he was trying to be a cool downhill racer

So one again let's educate them....

Uphill riders have the right-of-way.

All bikers must yield to all other trail users until they are waved on or the other users have passed by.

Not sure if we have it, but we should have a stcky with the most common used rules.

I thought out-of-control downhillers had the right of way

I'd just like to go on the record and state that I was NOT the guy yelling "OUTTA MY WAY!".

Is the Stunt High trail different from the Stunt Backbone?

Just read in other forum - stunt trail now officially closed to bikes. Will be signed and everything. Another one bites the dust. Please watch your speed and be courteous on the few trails that are left.

Man you are quick! I was on my way over to this board to post and you beet me to it!

FYI: The trail was always closed to bikes! Now it will be enforced!

On Thursday 2/14 CORBA met with the managing authorities for the Stunt High Trail. The outcome of the meeting is not good for Mountain Bikers. The trail will remain closed to Mountain Bike riders! "No Bikes" signs will be installed and MRCA Rangers will patrol and issue tickets to anyone riding the trail! All UC Reserve land is closed to bikes due to its Reserve status. We may have been able to convince the MRT to open their part of the trail to bikes but it is such a small section of the upper trail that it would not have meant much. Other options such as a reroute around the reserve or a new trail in the area were also discussed. A reroute around the reserve will not work due to private property outside of the Reserve land and steep rugged terrain.

Please only ride on trails that are open to bikes. Always control your speed and your bike. Scan the trail ahead for other trail users and animals. Use a bell to alert others of your presence! Bicyclists yield to hikers and horses. Remember your actions affect us all!

But was worth reading, because of this part:
