Talking RR: Kern Canyon Trail (2/2/08)

After my weekend plans fell apart, I shot an email out to some locals to see if anyone wanted to ride on Sat. Within a few hours it sounded like a couple folks wanted to ride the Kern Canyon trail.

Showing up the bottom trail head our group had grown to 9 riders and one dog. Folks were from Kern valley, Bakersfield, and Tehachapi.

We loaded up and headed to the trail head. We started the ride at freeway ridge.

Kern Canyon trail is by far my favorite cross county ride in Southern California. 11.5 miles of flowing singletrack. Its hard to beat.

The trail conditions were as good as they get. The rain made the D.G. like concrete. The trail is in great shape from recent trail work (thanks Stewards of the Sequoia)

The hills were turning green and the low snow line made the scenery just amazing.

All in all it was a great ride...Cool temps, beautiful scenery, great people and an amazing trail.

Nice Geno, I plan on coming up and riding that section during the Keyesville Classic next month. No racing for me but I want to hang out with the bubs.

Looks like some really sweet single track... I was wondering how far that trail is from Tehachapi? I have some family living there and this could make a good reason to go and visit. Because I can't imagine there is much else to do in Tehachapi.. Erik

I think its about an hour. The fasted way to get there would be to head towards Bakersfield then turn off on Comanche to 178. From the 58 it takes about 20 minutes if you drive fast on mt roads.

Thanks Geno... I could be up there pretty soon, probably before the classic.

I've only rode that trail a few times, but I do say it's a very good one.

What!? When exactly is this? Hmm, wonder if the wife will let me go... That looks really nice. Somewhat reminds me of Badger Gap... Nice RR and great pics.

Badger gap finishes up on Kern Canyon trail. Most people take badger gap to the end and head west on Kern Canyon trail to Delonega bridge.

Badger gap is a great trail but right now most of it is snowed under.

Yeah, looks just like the last section of Badger Gap right before you get to the road/bridge where the MRA van was waiting for us. That was a sweet ride. Here's Mr. Pain Freak in October of 2006:

Sounds like I missed out on that ride Geno. Lassen and I rode the Keyesville Classic trail and deviated from there. The trail was smooth and fast after the recent rains.

Next time! It just kind of came together last minute. I sent a message to the KRV-MTB yahoo group and it came together within a couple hours. Pretty sweet that we actually have a local mtb community forming.

The last section of trail your talking about actually is the Kern Canyon Trail/Kern River trail. The badger gap trail dead ends into it (there is a sign and bench).
