Default RR: Black Star/Eagle/Skyline/Black Star

6 of us set out this morning about 9:15. I managed to forget my mp3 player and camera, so there won't be any pics to this RR. Those who joined me were Willie, Paula(onmtnbiker911RN), Donny(Devoid169), David(Kish Me) and my friend Dave that rides the Fully with us on Thurs. It was his first time up Black Star.

We road a pretty good pace up Black Star and I could tell that my buddy Dave was going to have a hard time. Although a pretty strong rider, he's not used to the long climbs. He managed to make it to the 2nd climb past the golf ball then called it quits. For not ever doing any sustained climbs, big props to Dave for getting alot farther than I did when I first went to the Pain Divide.

The 5 of us were then met up with Dell aka Ladd Jasper. We went all the way to Eagle which was good cause I wanted Willie to know what lies beyond the golf ball. She did great and will have no problem with the CC. From there, down Eagle and up Skyline to Beek's and back down Black Star.

Everyone did really well. Dell was motoring along so he could get home to watch the kid and Paula was moving really well too. David was on an SS and was riding strong the whole way through. Donny has never gone past Beek's and did well for not ever doing much climbing. All in all, this was a great ride, pretty uneventful.

Lots of vehicle traffic on Skyline, but the MD and Skyline are in good shape. The burritos at Cronic Tacos hit the spot. Besides forgetting my mp3 player and a camera, I also forgot to charge my Garmin, so it went dead after 10 miles . wouldn't of been accurate anyway in terms of route cause I was doing intervals and kept turning around. This is the data from Willie and Paula. Total miles: just under 38, Ascent: about 5700.

Good job everyone.

Nice!
How's the washout near the top of Blackstar? Still the same, or is the line past it even narrower after this latest rain? (and have you heard any word about possible repairs to that section before the VQ/CC traffic hits it?)

There is only about a 2 ft wide portion left and looks like more will fall in. The WS will have someone there to warn riders. If it gets worse, we may have to cut into the hillside to widen it a bit.

See Gene's post:

This is from the thread that is about the closed area and is a "sticky" under the trailhead forum. The map is clear and anything inside of the grey boundaries is closed.

I rode up Eagle, across the divide and down Skyline this afternoon and was tripping out on all the tracks on Eagle. Did you run into the Lady at the base of Eagle?

Cheers,

C.K.

Ya, she was nice and let us go through but mentioned it was private property. She doesn't like the motorcycles going through.

Thanks again for hosting this ride Gene. I really needed it! It's always a pleasure riding with you because you always make sure everyone on the ride is OK.

Dave did awesome on his SS and Donny also stayed really strong the whole ride. Paula kept a great pace and so did Dell. I think the other Dave just needs a little more riding/climbing time in other than the Fully loop.

As for me, this was my longest ride ever (distance and time) and I think I did pretty well for not having ridden in 2 weeks. My knees and lower back were hurting a lot, so I think next time I'll pop an ibuprofen before the ride. Hopefully that'll help. Oh yeah and it was COLD for a lot of the ride. It was pretty warm on certain spots going up Blackstar, but when we got a couple miles past the golf ball it got COLD and pretty much stayed cold.

Overall, a great ride with great company. Except for the guy in the maroon truck that was stalking us. That was just creepy!

BTW: For some reason when I looked at my Garmin after the ride it said our total ascent was 5665 ft. But when I downloaded the ride, it said we climbed 6162 feet. So I'm gonna go with that number! 37.5 miles.; 6162 ft ascent.

Hey did this guy have a cheesy sticker that said "Canyon Patrol" on the side of it?

Donkey - it took us about 6 hours, so we were done at about 3:30.

Carl - I didn't notice cause I tried not to look at the guy. It was an old beater truck. I don't even know what kind. It was like an 83 Mazda or something. No idea.

Thanks Gene for leading us on a great training ride. I wouldn't have pushed myself like that on my own - the friendship and the way we push ourselves whilst in good company in the beautiful outdoors is a big part of what makes this community great. Great riding with new faces and learned more about what to pack on rides of this caliber - more food!! Time for bed....g'nite all!
