This is my first winter in SD and I'm trying to figure out what to ride and when. I generally ride XC, rolling singletrack, fire roads, etc, the faster the better. After the storms subside a bit, what trails in SD county area usually dry out the soonest? I'm trying to figure out where I can go riding over the next couple of months without eating a lot of mud (some is okay though!)

Bonita/Chula Vista is great after the rains, just need to know which trails to hit. It was epic yesterday to say the least.
I rode with Hoser's group & there was about six of us, who rode yesterday for 3 hours. Hoser's group rides are on Tues. & Thurs. @ 3:30pm, & Sun @ 8am out of Performance Bicycle parking lot in Bonita. |

Vote #2 for Daley.
Watch out for that rocky patch in Burnt Mtn. It can be hell on your ribs. ![]()

Daley gets pretty soupy. I don't think they close it, though. The only redeeming thing about seeing all of the tire marks in the dirt (next to the horse prints, of course) is that the rangers, et al totally bulldoze, add dirt, and scrape, etc. most of the fire roads at least once a year anyway.

Cool, thanks for the info everyone. Looks like I will be checking out Daley soon since it's pretty close to me. I actually did a little bit of recon there last Saturday but apparently 5000 other MTBers also wanted to get a quick ride in before the storms. Couldn't even find a place to park!

My wfie and I went hiking at Daley a couple weekends ago and it was the first time that I parked in the alternate lot that is way up in the NW corner of the park. Very few cars in this lot and puts you right up on Cougar Ridge. I will definitely do my next ride from this lot. Take Broadway north until you get to a stop sign with a sharp right. It may appear that the road ends here because the option to go straight says "No Outlet" Ignore that sign and go straight. The road will trun right and then sharp left and start looking at signs on the right for "Cougar Pass Road". Or something to that effect. Turn right. It is a dirt road and you keep going until you see the parking lot on the left. The grade gets a little steep but you don't need 4 wheel drive, I drove it easily in my Accord. From the parking lot cross the road and hit the trail head to the right. This will take you up Cougar ridge and to the point of intersections with Englemann Oak, Bobcat, etc...The climb up has one steep section but not very long and not too steep. |

Chadster: You should check Sycamore Canyon in Santee, I think it holds fine if you wait a couple of days after rain.

The creek crossings @ Sycamore will take a good bit of time before they are below hub level. Daley/Elfin/La Costa are sure bets.

That's just what I was going to say. Those creek crossings at Sycamore will be nasty for awhile.

A little off topic but are the Daley trails marked or is it just a giant series of trails. I'd like to ride there sometime next month but I work most weekends (unless I use vac time and after the races I have few hours left) so I'm gonna try to just head out and see what I see.

Jman,
They're not signed, but here's the map (hopefully attached). This map is usually avail at the trailhead, but sometimes out. Not too hard to figure out which trail you're on if you've got the map, since they have eliminated most non-sanctioned trails. |
