Default To the Riders in Aliso & Wood Canyons today...

Stay out... clearly posted. Was going to take pictures of the truck and car with you muddy dummies cleaning your bikes off... Had my kid in the car and wanted to get into it, but could not. If it was you, PM me and we can talk face to face. Hell even my 5 year said the park was closed because of the rain.

Get a clue. Call the park after rains or check the web page, read the signs.

Agreed. The damage caused by selfish riders ruins the trails for months to come.

People ride everywhere else when there's rain and it messes trails... the only difference is they don't close down national forest singletrack.

My beef isnt with people riding in the rain - its people riding trails they shouldnt be riding where there is certain plant life or wild life.

I am not an advocate of regulation and policing, I think people should be able to make their own decisions in life. The problem is some people have bad judgement.
Some trails are much more resistant to rainy day adventures, which can be fun, others get torn up and leave damage for all of us for some time to come.

It happens at every park. Frustrating for sure.

I've thought about hanging out at the gate of CHSP to ask people to respect the closure, but who has the time.

If they were there cleaning their bikes off, why are you calling them out here? Especially if at that time they were blocking you from getting into your car.

Where were they parked, Church or Canyon Vistas?

Problem is that the biking community is big and only a fraction use the message boards. Most people are casual riders who don't really have a stake in the longevity of the sport and don't have any concept of park rules. Still blows me away because it can't be that much fun climbing a bike wiht 20 lbs of mud on it.

I'd still have said something to them just so they knew for the next time, tho....

I agree...

Except when others' poor judgment or bad decisions affect others.

"The problem is some people have bad judgement."

This was also part of my post. Meaning idiots require policing.

To each his own, but people do need to think about the effects of what they do. If somebody rides a muddy trail in a closed park it gives the rest of us that image, and horse riders and hikers would love to shut down our access in a heartbeat. If you want to ride rain and mud, stay off of popular trails and state parks, there is plenty of other places to tear up.

My 2 cents.

My beef is when you're heading down your favorite trail at 15 mph and suddenly there are tons of new ruts you had no idea about.

There are a lot of trails that handle rain well, Aliso and the Santa Ana mountains don't. There are plenty of places in the San Gabriels that do, but with the amount of rain we just had, I'd still suggest you give it another weekend. People back east and up north go for months without riding, we are missing a few weeks at most. Respect the closures and use common sense.

I have been to Aliso a few days after the park opened because of rain closure, Meadows was nasty muddy. Totally not fun. Why anyone would like to ride in those conditions is beyond me. As much as I can't wait to hit the trails, I hope they are closed until they are nice and dry.

I hate to say it but typically folks that do this are not the types to visit sites like STR or any other site for that matter. They are not about to say hey it was me so they can get flamed in public.

I was driving by the park entry at the time and picking up my boy from a "play date" with his bud who lives in Harvest (at the park entry). They were not blocking my car... if they were that would be another story.

I call it out to bring the attention to riders to be sure they know when actions may cause concerns. The impact is not so much in the trails, but in maintaining access and good neighbors. In part my "call out" is also due to the frustration of the moment... I want to stress that... I fully expect these riders are not part of this board, I gotta vent... I have worked at the park as a docent in the museum and have seen first hand the riders who step over the Park Closed signs, state they did not see the sign and then argue with the Rangers. I also am local to the park and hear the discussions on "those bikers" all the time, so to me the impact of activities such as this, gives the perception we all do it.

I have had my "discussions" with riders in the park after and during rains as well with the Whiting Ranch closure during the time of the fires. I know where the discussion often leads and with my kid in the car I was not about to engage in one... Perhaps they do not participate or know about this forum, but I can vent and bring awareness, if they do, I welcome them to talk.

I love the park and this area as we all do, and it is one of the main reasons I live next to it. I am also active with the conservancy as a past docent, I think we all should have access when we want to ride, and would hate to see the park closed due to occurrences such as this.

I'll get off my soap box now...
