Default Wet Ride

Want to get some suggestions/ advice from you guys. Me and a friend are looking to ride this Sunday if it's only light rain. First off... we're not looking for trails or intend to ride trails that will get damaged due to our riding or cause any erosion problems. We're looking for a place where we can do some riding and not cause any trouble.

I'm thinking of Turnbull Fire Road up then fire road down - not gonna try the trails even. Is this a good idea? How about Fullerton Loop? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... If mother nature decides to showers us more, then it's Call of Duty 4 once again.

Thanks

There might be some suggestions here: Best Trails after a Rain?

Thanks for the link, nothing about Turnbull or Fully though. These are the only places I'm willing to drive this weekend sorry; so any feedback about them would be cool

I would recommend playing your game instead. The weather looks really crappy for the next few days and the trails need to rest from all the rain.

Not sure what city you're in, trying to think of a bike path near fullerton and I came up with the Santa-Ana river trail. Here is a link:

Please, NOT Turnbull! Turnbull's trails, as well as the fireroads, will get torn up very easily by any type of contact after the rains. You will create devastating tire track marks in it if it's wet enough, which it probably will be if it isn't already. If left to dry in that condition it will take a ton of work to fix.

The only place I can think of that has ride-able trails in the rain is the lower Sullivan Canyon in Brentwood. It is mostly rocky/shale mix and has good drainage. I still wouldn't ride it though. I'm not sure if it's still a good idea or not. Although it appears to be highly resistant to damage by wet riding.

Hope that makes some sense and helps.

Duc

The paved path that follows Aliso Creek is pretty good. It starts / ends Cooks corner / Aliso Woods Parking lot. 26 miles up and back.

I'll be doing laps up and down the pea gravel fire road under the electrical towers in Ladera ranch. Probably 2 miles each way, but it's got some hills.

I'll be on my road bike again this weekend. I'm going out in an hour. I'm just going to ride about 25 miles though. Last night I tried it without a base layer....Big Mistake! That was freekin cold. It's amazing how much warmer you stay with just a thin base layer of merino wool or even regular wool. Tonight I'm wearing it all.

I didn't read the thread about "best places to ride after the rains" but maybe the reason those places weren't mentioned is because they aren't the best places to ride after the rains.

Do you really want to trash your bike in the mud? The San Juan Trail is mostly good after the rains, but when that place is wet, it's really hard on the bikes.

Not sharing an opinion, just a fact... when the boyscouts or whoever did trail work at SJT they added a bunch of dirt to the lower switchbacks, which covered up all of the DG.

FWIW, you aren't interested, but Indian Truck Trail does pretty well in the rain, and after the sun today should be fairly dry.

I just rode up the Brown Mtn fireroad in the San Gabes today. The road is in great shape, a few new slides but nothing major. There is snow just above the Ken Burton junction and it looks like Sunset and the Merrills are snowed in too.
The Gabrielino is raging and the creek coming out along El Prieto was deep and fast. I did not ride El P due to the running water.

I got in 20 on the road bike after work. Beats the trainer, that's for sure!
It turned into a nice night once the clouds cleared out. Clear and clean.
I lost my tail light, which made the ride back pretty scary.
Hope to do a longer one tomorrow and maybe some granite on Sunday.

There's always Trabuco Creek Road from Live Oak Canyon Road uphill toward Holy Jim. It'll be muddy but you can't damage the road any more than it already is.
