Last I checked, there wasn't any mountain biking allowed in Joshua Tree NP. Or if there was, it was only one seven mile section that's probably not worth dragging the bikes out for. Is that still the deal? I'm going this weekend to meet up with a friend and do some climbing. I'd like to ride too, but will probably bring the road bike instead.

Which way did he go?

You can ride out there, but it has to be on established roads open to vehicle traffic. The last time I was out there, we just rode around on all the paved roads.

i'm pretty sure that you can ride on any of the dirt roads in the park (there are miles and miles of them). that's about it legally...

I have ridden at Joshua Tree unfortunately not worth it since you can only stay on pavement and dirt roads...I rode the Geology Tour Road solo for about 15 miles in till I got scared of the desolation and turned around .....
If you have time, check out the hike from Cottonwood Visitor Center to Lost Palm Oasis. This trail would be awesome if open to bikes.... |

Actually, there's some great times to be had on a bike in JTNP, you just have to prepare accordingly. We've ridden Pinkham Canyon a few times now & enjoyed every minute (well, most minutes!) of it. Sure, it can be sandy, so you want to go after a rain, or call the ranger station to get a line on conditions.
The last ride we did started up Thermal Canyon & led into Pinkham Canyon, coming out near the south ranger station, down the road & back on the power line cuts. It was fantastic! Here's a link on Mary's blog to that ride: http://sirenmary.blogspot.com/2007/1...ploration.html |

Yeah, I've been thinking about Pinkham! You might also consider a shuttle ride, getting dropped off towards the end of Geology Tour Rd., and going down Berdoo Canyon. I'd rather ride my mtn bike on the dirt roads, than a road bike on asphalt, cuz the pavement ain't real wide...
