Harden the F Up

Well, despite getting off to a slow start this morning, I knew I'd want to get out and ride my bike instead of just sitting on the couch all day.
Good choice. Temps were great at Hurkey when we got there (around noon). The park was basically closed, so no one was around. Right before we pulled in Justin said that we were going to do the first lap sub-one hour. I've never done a lap at Hurkey that fast, but I figured I'd giv'er and see what happened. From the gate to the back entrance (8.5mi or so, 1100ft of climbing) I did it in 00:55:13. I was really pretty happy with my speed, considering I had done just under 40 miles and just over 8,500ft of climbing in the two days before. Not bad. Lap two was much slower paced, and we took plenty of photos. Happy say that it was a great way to start 2008. I missed out on having a small group of friends to ride with, but Justin and I always enjoy our solo rides, together. ![]() Some photos - ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Big wheels are good for the soul ![]() First token bar shot of 2008! ![]() ![]() ![]() 2nd token handlebar shot of 2008! ![]() ![]() ![]() My first time EVER making up the rock climb near the end of the loop ![]() ![]() Someone remind me next time.. no MJ tongue ![]() I truly hope everyone else enjoyed the start of 2008 as much as we did! Thanks for the RR. Nice pics.
Did that ride a couple days ago. Good stuff , completely alone out there in the silent wilderness. Very peaceful. The big wheels made all the difference in the soft sand. The first DH before the meadow was slooooow.

I think things might have dried up a bit since you were there, it wasn't too bad. The sand though, man is there a lot more sand out there than what there used to be? Seems to me there is LOTS more sand. We were goofing around and having fun, I think that is apparent in this photo...

I thought the course was 9 miles. I've never beaten the sub 1 hour mark. I've got to 1:01 twice but thought I was going to die.

It's the 24 Hours of Adrenalin course in Idyllwild. It was one of the first trails I truly enjoyed riding, and still love it every time I return. Unfortunately 07 was not a good year for Hurkey. They bulldozed two of the climbs. The second remains a fire road, which is fine, but the first is just a mess of fallen logs.
For some reason the downhills are super sandy, which they never have been before. Lots of rain damage out there currently as well. I think 24HOA or someone usually does a good job getting the course in shape for the spring race, though. It truly is a great course. Not to mention if anyone wants to go up there, there are a TON of trails. I can probably set up a full day of riding in the next few months if the interest is there. Dean and Scott are really familiar with the area as well, as are a few other STR members. |

Do you guys ever rest or are you part of some mutant cult I'm not aware of? I know most average Joe and Jane would be wiped the day after doing the Merills followed by San Juan back to back. I'm sore and tired just reading about it. Every day, I see RR's of you and Justin riding here and riding there, a few K in climbs, DH, XC, AM, etc. Man, please stop making us all (some) feel so pathetic! I guess being young has some advantages.
![]() BTW, nice RR'(s) and happy new year! ![]()
