Default Ticks

Just a reminder, it's tick season!

I stopped for a gel break on a remote trail today. Low grass, nothing over 8".
I sat down for 20 sec., and then saw a tick on my leg. Proceeded to brush it and four others off my legs.
Back at my car I found three others, including two that had started to embed.

They seem to flock to me, so I'll start lathering up with the bug juice again.

Chris where were you riding?

Ticks have to be up there with the world's most gnarly critters. I recommend using Jungle Juice plus Insect Repellent which can be bought at REI. It has a weird odor to it but will keep those ticks at bay.

Some people have a reaction to this stuff. In other words, it might take off your skin along with those pesky ticks. Also, the usual cautions apply...

In Example:
1. Don't swallow copious amounts of Jungle Juice
2. Spraying Jungle Juice into the face of a buddy while setting fire to the stream is deemed a manner inconsistent with its labeling and a violation of federal law

I hiked a remote trail in CHSP a couple years ago with some friends and had my first encounter with ticks that I do NOT wish to repeat. Aside from practically sprinting in the air to get down the trail, the four of us drop our trousers on the main trail just to double check because there were so many. To say I'm completely freaked out by ticks is an understatement .

Ive used permethrin and had good results. But you must be careful on what fabrics you spray it on. Ive tried it on my shingaurds and shoes with no problems.

Ugh I hate ticks. Last year I had four or five crawling on me when I went I stood up after taking a breather on Trabuco Canyon Trail, and one stuck in my bicep of all places when I got back to the truck.

Make sure to periodically check yourself and scan other riders every half hour or so so make sure they don't have a chance to dig in.

Remember, proper tick removal involves not crushing the body or breaking off the head.
