Default Coal Canyon to Sierra Peak to SKyline loop.

Wow. 7 of us finished this badboy. What a body drain. Rockinthecasbah, Bighit, myself (chewyeti), boing boing, jslow and hardcharger finished this ride.

Coal canyon is just nasty. 2200 feet ascent in 5 miles. The loop back to the car via road ride was 22 miles and around 4000' ascent total.

I am beat. Other than me exploding a shittymano chain, and breaking two spokes, life was grand. No other issues..or flats or anything.

Probably took us a solid hour and a half to crest coal, and another 30-40 to make it to the antennas.

From there a nice ridge run to beeks, hang a left and rock the troy lee trail (singletrack). That was the payoff for a few of us.

I hope the others chime in. But i had a blast...and am more beat on than i have ever been. I was also severely underdressed with just a jersey. *must have been 30 degrees at the peak*.

A nice dinner at backwoods bbq where we ran into surlygal and 1x1clyde. Beer, friends, beef and beans.... what more could you ask.

Thanks for a fun time guys!

Aaron

Default RR: coal canyon skiline single tracks

Myself, ricky (rocinthecabas, Marion (cheweyeti)Brian (boingboing I think)Josh (jslow),Sam ( brewmaster)and Joe(hard charger) did this ride. The climb was difficult and steep.Marion broke a chain and two spokes in the first mile or so. Total millage was around 22 with close to probably 3500 in elevation, maybe more. The skyline single tracks are sketchy at best, very steep, and lots of exposure.Ricky and Marion rode most it while others opted to walk.We went to Backyard BBQ off of Green River for beer and food. A great day. Heres some pics, not the best day for photos.Plus it was cold up top.

Good times today indeed. It was great climbing with everyone. It was tough but lots of fun. Thanks to Aaron and Ricky for leading the way. On top of it all, we ran into 1x1clyde (Neil), surlygal (Traci), Maddie, and ChongoBlanco at Backwoods BBQ afterwards. I am stuffed from dinner.

Here is my assessment of my 6 riding partners for the day.

Stud of the day: Joe (HardCharger) who rode Santiago Oaks this morning and then came to this ride. But we had left the parking before he showed up, so he caught up to us on the Coal Canyon climb! A true stud indeed. Wow.

Mr. Sarcasm: Josh (Jslow). If you haven't ridden with him, you should. He's one funny dude. All the cool kids are riding 29ers. Josh is a cool kid.

Mr. Mechanical: Aaron (Chewyeti) aka Marion (LOL!). A busted chain and two busted spokes on his rear wheel. He rode the whole thing including steep downhill singletrack trails like a champ.

Mr. Fix-it: Ricky (Rockinthecasbah) always seems to fix whatever Aaron breaks. Today was no different.

Steady as we go: Danny (Bighit8 ) was grinding up the hill the whole way. No bitching, no excuses, just pounding out the climb no matter how chunky or nasty it got.

Smokey: Brian (BoingBoing) lived up to this at the top of Sierra Peak.

Here are some pics I snapped of the day:

Aaron fixes his blown up chain

Left to right: Brian (BoingBoing), Danny (Bighit8 ), Josh (Jslow), Aaron (Chewyeti) pounding out a climb

The second round of mechanicals. Danny lubes his chain...

...while Aaron secures the busted spokes

Joe (HardCharger) catches up to us. Good thing we had mechanicals or we may not have met Joe.

Josh hits the flask at Sierra Peak

Ricky and Aaron get held up on a descent by a family and their dogs. We had no idea why they would be on such a steep trail.

What a blast! That was my first STR ride and I don't know what was the bigger challenge--the climb or finishing a plate from Backwoods! But I know the camraderie was top notch. I guess what they say about STR is true!

Props to Chewyeti for leading a great ride. And props to Hardcharger who did this as his second ride today!

There were a lot of funny moments today.

First, coming down Skyline there were these douche bag teenagers in a VW Passat with a flat front tire. For some reason, they thought it was appropriate to yell "go faster!" every time they saw us. It first it was annoying, but then it was just funny.

My favorite conversation of the day:

Aaron: Ricky, is there a trail right there?

Ricky: Yeah, but it's only good if you're carrying a bong.

I have come down that trail dozens of times and have never seen another person on it. I've seen some dh'ers fixing a bike on it once, but not riding.

Unhappy Awesome ride guys!

Glad I caught up to you guys. Great meeting everyone, thanks for posting the names Brew Master (I'm terrible w/names).

Next time I wont schedule another ride if I doing this climb. My legs were spent. As we got closer to the radio towers my right leg/thigh was cramping up so bad, I just kept seeing you guys get farther & farther away. I was seriously thinking about turning around and just head back to the car .

Then heading to Skyline, my left leg started cramping up..uh oh... man I was getting real scared

Ya I ran into those guys in the VW Passat. They yelled out something to me but I just ignored them and blasted to the bottom. I wanted to get to the bottom before another bad cramp.

I waited at the bottom of Skyline but I wasnt sure if you guys took another exit. I was starting to get real cold... and it was getting dark!

Anyways I headed down Lincoln. Called my GF to pick me up (since we live in Corona)... doubled back to Foothill & Lincoln to see if I can find you guys. Back at the car, I must have just missed you guys again (2x in one day ) I saw cars pulling out. Josh/JSlow saw me... and we chat a bit.

Glad you guys made it back ok!

All in all, good times. I can't believe Aaron did that ride with a single jersey and arm warmers! Or that Joe did it as a 2nd!

we went down the paved service road, down to mangular... and rode ontario till it dead ends. hang a left and before green river there is a 'wash' trail in your right that gets you to palisades.
