Allison because you already know part of the route: start at JPL and go to Inspiration Point just keep climbing Lowe Toll Road all the way up to Mt Wilson rd, turn right, go to Kenton Devore and drop down to Rincon Redbox Fireroad, climb to Red Box then take Strawberry Peak trail up and over to Colby Trail, continue to Colby Canyon to Highway 2, drop down to Switzers Campground and the Gabrielino all the way back to JPL.
I am still in Sedona so I can't give you total miles but it should be 40 or more with a lot of climbing. When I get home to my maps I can give you better numbers. Tom Harrison Maps will cover the area well. His Mt Wilson area map will cover the route I just laid out. Also get his front side Angeles Front Country and Angeles High Country. I have spent many days out there riding alone you don’t really need a guide…his maps are very good. Study the maps there are hundreds of miles of fireroads and single tracks out there....with huge climbs. Link to buy maps ![]()

Mike’s getting lost is legendary, even with a GPS in his truck he was able to take the wrong turn coming out to Sedona earlier this week.

OUCH! That's a lot of climbing, the only route I haven't been on is Strawberry Peak. We'll have to tag along next time you guys do it. We had a great time out there. Thanks to Allison, Justin, and Brian for waiting up for me I hope you guys had a good time. I saw Brian today at the Path while picking up some new tires, his leg looked great. Dunno how all that blood came out of such a little scratch. We're back in the SG's tomorrow for a new trail. Happy New Year Everyone! |

Strawberry is one of the easier ones and one of my favorites of the front range.

![]() Great review Allison, hope to meet you out on the trails some time soon. As you heard already, there is much more to see on the San Gabriels. Here are my 2 cents on another long ride option with lots of fire road climbing ending at Chantry Flats...If I remember correctly it is over 30 miles...done it once with ermtb boys...Park either at the top of Santa Anita before the gate that takes you to Chantry or park at the very top of Chantry and come back down the road. Take Santa Anita down to Foothill and go east towards Canyon Rd (Between Myrtle and Mountain). Take Canyon north and stay on Canyon (stay to your right as it forks twice) untill you reach Monrovia Canyon Park. As you pass the ranger booth, find the gated road on the right and climb it for about 3 miles or so until it you get to White Saddle, from there continue left until you reach Rincon Red Box Truck Trail, which is about another 3 miles or so from White Saddle. You cover a lot of distance on Rincon Rd and it gets a little tricky as it crosses a few intersections but it eventually takes you to New Comb Pass, which then takes you down to Chantry via Gabrielino. I'm pretty sure Dean, Scott, Mikey and Brian (MTBMaven) will give you better details... |

Nice! Glad you enjoyed the local offerings. It's good stuff!
Like Mike and others said, lots more to be had. If you're looking for long training routes, Mike should put you in touch with Nate W. He knows the area pretty well and is constantly training for races.
