After changing diapers like a madman lately and having a pretty erratic sleep schedule I planted the seed earlier this week and let my wife (JOD) know that I needed to knock out some miles and get a nice dose of descending to tune up for the Bell Ridge ride coming up next week.
Anyway...dft, Woody and I decided that we'd end this weekend right and hit one of Allison's favorite trails - Coldwater Trail Coldwater is located in the eastern Santa Ana Mtns. and has appx. 3,600 of vertical descending in not too many miles. The trail is a real backcountry epic that doesn's see too many visitors and it floooows so good. It took several hours of climbing (I think around 4K) to get to the trailhead to cash in our miles.I gotta say though that we all decided that the 4K climb up ITTand onto the summit is pretty ideal for biggish and heavish bikes since the grade is pretty friendly and theres plenty of nice scenery to keep your mind off the pain that you're going through at the moment. We did decide that we'd give hike-a-biking up Holy Jim a try from the Main Divide instead of staying on the trail. I do gotta say that it seemed to go by rather quickly and less painfully then the pedal to the summit. NOTE: I didn't get many shots during the descent due to the trail being in primo shape and flowing way too good. Anyway, enough of the the jawjacking and on with some shots... D Hard to believe a trail could begin in a place thats so ugly ![]() Woody & Dt takin' a break...BTW, meet Dft he takes his green goodluck T-shirt everywhere... ![]() Woody & Dt pointing towards the ridge that Coldwater Drops down... ![]() Woody takin' a breather as we HAB'ed up Holy Jim... ![]() Dft finally decided to let the green T get some sun and air out a bit while we left it here and proceeded to the top of Coldwater... ![]() More Holy Jim Habbage... ![]() Woody decided to ride his bike - man this trail has epic views... ![]() Finally takin' a rest at the top of CW.... ![]() And the bikes were tired too... ![]() Lookin' down at the climb that we had come up - damn I'm tired... ![]() Woody doin' some slicing and dicing down HJ... ![]() No more shots from here on out cause' the trail was in too perfect of shape from the rain - all the switchbacks were primo and we were having way too much fun to stop. Last sequence of Dt towards the really fun stuff near the bottom lock & load section... ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Great day out there... |

killer ride, perfect temps and super tacky soil on the switchbacks. this trail has some of the toughest switches around (way harder than anything on san juan,HJ, iron mountain, and even ellie lane) but they were way easier since the soil wasn't a dustball. the bottom steep section was killer also, although a rut is starting to develop. good riding denny/woody, definetly a killer backcountry/remote ride with a looong descent: in my top 3 for SA rides for sure. now time for bell ridge!
ps. finally cleaned the bottom roller, was 0/3 before today. |

Wow the ranger kicked us off the Main divide yesterday and told us it was closed from Bedford to ITT. Yesterday, I was turned around on the Main Divide 1/3 from the Upper HJ trailhead. The FS really needs to be more consistant or there closure maps don't mean squat. Glad you guys got your ride in. I bet Coldwater is in great shape. I plan on doing a ride up HJ to CW up ITT and down Trabuco for some VQ training in Feb.
