Default Pics from today's ride

Scott, Chris, and I went on a great ride today. We found a trail that was new to us. There were some cool granite rollers. We hit a little snow at the top. Great weather.
Taking a break at the top of the climb

Nice roller

View from above

Snow was on the North slopes even down low

A little air

Cool view with the lake below

Love the granite. The sky was really blue today.

Another great day in the mountains.

Very nice Jeff. What side of the Lake? Shuttle, loop or out and back?

Default more info

Justin is correct. This trail is near Just Outstanding. It is something that I have been scooping out for a while. I see some trail here and there, then do a little exploring with the motorcycle and find a new section. This is the first time we had ridden this on our bikes. This will be another way to end JO. It will be nice because it is singletrack almost all the way down to the lake without as much climbing as the Dutch Flat route. On Sunday we rode it as a shuttle but not up to Shirley Meadows since it has too much snow. We shuttled up about 20 minutes, then did an hour climb on a snowy fire road to the top. This route tops out at about 5500'. I think it will stay relatively snow free for most of the winter. If it does we will have another cool downhill to ride during the winter months.
There is no way I could give good enough directions so that you could find this trail on your own. I will just have to show you.

If you are willing to guide a ride, I'll do my best to be there. I've explored the piutes a lot on motorcycle, but never been across into the keyesville area.

The Greenhorns are more flowy than the Piutes. Piutes is a lot of 1st gear while Greenhorns is 2nd and 3rd. Both are great on a dirtbike. You should try out the other side of the river.

That sounds good to me. Two questions: 1) is that area rideable during the winter? and 2) are there any decent trail maps available? The few maps I've seen/used in the piutes have been worse than useless. They have been dangerous. Thanks

The answer to your first question is yes and no. There are several great loops that are open now. The area never really closes to motorcycles. It all depends on the snow conditions. Winter does limit where you can go quite a bit. The lower elevation trails are better during the winter. Right now on the Kern Canyon Trail the dirt is moist and there is no dust. The traction is perfect. You can ride a great 50 mile lollipop shaped loop without worrying about snow. That loop is 99% singletrack. It is hard to beat.

There are some really good OHV maps that the forest service have printed as part of the trail designation program. There are maps for the Greenhorns, Breckenridge, and Piutes. The maps only have ohv trails. Here are the links

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/proj...eckenridge.pdf

http://www.fs.fed.us/r5/sequoia/proj...s/4-Piutes.pdf

The Forest Service offices here have free copies of these that are big. They fold up and can be carried in your pack. Hope this helps, Jeff.

Nothing that a Garmin GPS can't navigate to, or an Edge 305 can't track and load onto MotionBased. All you have to do is log it and download it. Only problem is, being a homegrown local, you ride so damn fast, I don't have the chutzpah to keep up with you without crashing, so I need dust trails like Wiley Coyote does with Roadrunner to keep you in my sights on the ride down. My gut feel tells me this is Wagy Trail v8.04

There's this granite boulder, oh, about 8 to 10 feet high, has about a 45 to 50 degree pitch to it, with a drop of about a foot to a foot and a half or so at the bottom, into a sand pit. I have a couple of ribs that remember it well, for the past 7 weeks. I have visions of that drop, in my mind, every night and every morning. It will indoctrinate most that are not advanced into the "Over The Bars" club. I need to conquer that demon.

This is the slab we rode in July. The slab in jeffj's pic is a few hundred yards away and is a lot steeper. I hadn't found that one yet when you guys were here. It is an interesting roller because it is convex. It keeps getting steeper and steeper. Then at the bottom you have to get over to the left or you will hit a rock. I saw one kid go OTB on it. He luckily cleared the rocks and landed in the sand at the bottom.
