Default RR: The Ride From Hell

Aaron (Chewyeti), Ricky (Rockinthecasbah) and I set out for a night ride tonight. It really turned out to be the ride from hell.

1) On the first climb, Ricky snaps his chain. No big deal, we put it back together and go on our way.

2) On a weird turn, I end up falling over into the brush with my bike on top of me. No big deal, just a few scrapes, so I climb out and we are on our way. About a half hour later I realize that my rear blinker light is not on my bike, probably out in the bushes still.

3) Then on a climb my brand new middle ring purchased at the Path yesterday breaks a tooth, which bends the hell out of my granny ring as it slams down. The granny ring is so bent my cranks won't turn all the way around with the bent teeth hitting the rear swing arm.

With no other options, we decide to bend the granny ring back in place. We look around for rocks, but find none. So first we try a multi tool. Then we try Aaron's CRKT knife. Nope. Finally, we take my seat out, Aaron wedges the seat post against the granny ring, while I hold the bike and Ricky knees the seat to bend the granny ring. Surprisingly, this worked after probably 15 minutes of futility.

4) About 100 yards after this mess, Aaron snaps his chain. Again we stop to fix things. (By "we" I mean Aaron and Ricky fix the chain while I watch.)

5) About another few hundred yards later, when we think we're on our way, Aaron's chain locks up again.

When all was said and done it took us over 2 hours to go only 8 miles. Luckily we had enough light for all of our repairs and didn't freeze too badly. Beers and chicken waited for us, so it didn't end all that badly.

The best part was that amidst all the problems, we were laughing and having a good time. Who knew a mess of mechanicals could be so much fun!

Here are some pics of my jacked up chain rings. We'll see how the Path's warranty works out on my chain rings.

dam! that's nuts...but it is moments like these that makes the ride that much more memorable...and even better when you can laugh about it DURING the ride and more so after.

Dang, never woulda guessed that was possible. You must have some mad lower body strength to create that drivetrain carnage. Time to lay off the buns of steel video workouts!

Looks like a Race Face chain ring.

When things like that happen its sometimes best to laugh about it. It also makes for a good story to tell.

Race Face it is.

If I had been by myself I would not have been laughing, but somehow we all had a good time despite the destruction.

that is a lot of stuff to go wrong. seems a little steep of a price to pay, but the bike gods were obviously upset with you for not buying lighter parts for the wife's bike.

The bent granny surprises me more than the broken tooth. I stay away from aluminum rings because they wear fast, I also like 5 bolt rings…I do not see your granny ring bending with a 5 bolt pattern.

So far as a warranty replacement, it could have been a bad shift that broke the tooth and not a bad ring. I don't always replace chainrings with missing teeth they still work fine, the big ring on my RIP is missing 5 teeth because I use it as a bash....still shifts fine.

I have been wanting to stay away from aluminum rings. What other choices are out there for a standard 4 bolt, 3 ring design?

That's crazy! Quite an epic story there. Sorry to hear about the bike problems for you guys.

Probably isn't the bike shop's fault, but hopefully the manufacturer will hook you up with replacements, since clearly something was wrong there!!

Did you get a boulder stuck in between the chain rings after your bush experience?

As I was reading this, I was thinking - make sure I'm behind BM while riding.

The next thing to go will be his brakes....

BM,

It looks like your granny took out the middle ring

You may want to replace the entire drive train

DZ, how would the granny take out the middle ring? I wasn't shifting from granny to middle if that's what you mean.

I just replaced the cassette, chain, and middle ring yesterday, so I will probably just replace all of the rings together. Yesterday I specifically asked Sid if there would be any problems replacing one ring from and different manufacturer. His response was if it shifts funny then there is problem. Thanks. Well, it sure shifted funny!

I don't think it is the Path's fault that the part broke since they don't make the rings, however they are the retailer so I will go back to them. I'm sure they will take care of things.

didn't know what you were doing when it broke

I just saw that granny ring and think it should have also been replaced.

Get a SS damit!
