Default RR: Palm canyon epic

The PCE stud riders. Everyone that replied showed up.
The originater Cjwally, calepic, shinken, evdog, singletrakk, OG (oscar) and I,.
We shuttled up in the Craigmobile ( thanks craig seems you are always there to volunteer your time and gas, str riders salute you. ) Got on the trail about 8:39 and bam we were on the gas. No real breaks till we got to the boulder roll, (which craig did hands down, my bruised palm and nose from the crash at Mt. lowe kept me in the spectator seat) at this point it was about mile 18, Ya baby!
Only 2 flats and 1 chain break, I won't count the flat tire I had when I got home.
We got lucky when we arrived at the wash to find packed sand from the rain that was ridable so we pumped through it to dunn road and up to the oasis, Wheww!
When we started the ride it was a nippy 40 something degrees. As we rode it warmed to the low 50s along with a colder wind chill factor . Up to this point the wind really wasn't a factor in that it was pretty much at our backs even helping to push us through the wash. When we got to the Oasis the wind began to pick up and the wind chill got chillier!!.
Here is where things got interesting. As we climbed Hans' the wind started to howl. We were at times protected by the mountain but when we got to the top we were getting manhandled . Craig and I attacked hans dh, bouncing, bobbing, swerving and jumping this wonderful stretch of single track all the while dodging the wind trying to keep from being blown off the cliffs or into the rocks. At times we were actually blown into the mountain. Craig and i were knob to knob ping pongging our way down the mountain until I sucked a cactus bulb up in between my tire and brake arch. From the sound it made I thought I had a hundred punctures. I stopped pulled off the bulb spun the tire and low and behold stans to the rescue , no leaks, but Calepic was loooooong gone, You rock Craig. Everyone else followed thankful the wind gods spared us from the rocks. cliffs and cactus.
On to cindy's we went with cjwally giving me the lead Oscar and calepic to follow. All I could hear was
Oscar hootin and hollerin all the way down! At the bottom there was nothing but high fives, smiles and expletive adjectives about the trail by everyone, this is mountain biking at its finest.
Cjwally and shinken did the ride on ss's with jose going full rigid, whoa dude Jose must have balls of steel. We spent most of the time chasing Cj up the climbs and watching him bounce that thing over all the rocks. You guys kick aaaaaaass.
Thanks to all for another Palm Canyon Epic.

My camera broke so I don't have any pics but it was truly an Epic ride. The early start and fairly quick pace allowed us to finish the ride long before dark. As Tom said, the wind going up that bitch of a wash was a blessing but it was a curse going down Hahn Buena Vista. Talk about sketchy. Bombing down that loose, exposed singletrack with the wind trying to blow you off the mountain was a bit of a challenge. It was great to ride with new STR member Evdog.

So when are we doing this again?

I'm a go. It's on my calendar.

The only question now: Sand wash or Dunn Road?

i really want to hit up this ride sometime, looks cool.
but if you really want a palm springs epic ride, do this route (8000 foot descent in 11 miles, pure singletrack, very technical!)

I may have heard of this... Is this trail legal or illegal? To do this, you have to take the tram to the top right?

There was a thread last year on MTBR of two guys that did it. They took the pedals off thier bikes and hiked from the bottom. They may not let you take a bike on the tram, the area around the top of the tram is wilderness and no bikes.

that was me. no possible way to take bike on tram, illegal at the top and they don't allow it. just about all the trail is actually legal (shocker!). its a wild one, spent 9 hours of pure hike-a-bike for 8000, yea removing pedals helps alot when pushing next to you. i attempted 4 years, finally made the top on 4th attempt (well a few hundred feet from the top). water is tough, ride was 12+ hours. other attempts was way too hot and snowing up top. descent takes like 4 hours since super technical and ultra tigth switchbacks.

here is typical section, its like that for 8000.

OMG you are the man.... This is my new mission, but with winter here and all the rains/snow, I am a little late. October would prob be the best.

This is an epic journey for sure...
