interesting option. but i think pushing it would still be a tad easier? its a fairly technical trail, i myself want a bike heavier than 28(that's just preference though). the trail has hundreds of like 8-10 inch drops, so i just lift up the front tire on the HAB, not too bad. its just a slow/steady/long pace up the mountain. i stash 2 water bottles on the way up so even if i run out of water up top, i have some for later in the ride. (and makes load lighter)

yea window for ride is only spring/fall. ideal bike is a 6 inch bike, beefy tires, 8 inch rotors, something like 33-36 pounds. i'm actually only going to do the first 6000 feet next time, its gets very steep and very technical after that. doing 6000 will make a purely enjoyable ride, not pushed for daylight and not ending ride with no water. we start with 100 ounzes, 2 bottles and down a bottle right before starting (pratically burping up water), still ran out last time.

Craig, I think Justin may be referring to the 8000' hike a bike ride... If not, I thought the Sir9 was the perfect bike to ride for the PCE. |

I have done quite a bit of backpacking in the Grand Canyon with up to 40 lbs.(I weigh 150 lbs) its really not that bad....you get yourself some hiking poles (for balance) and you are good to go! The weight is on the hips, not on your shoulders (like a backpack)..... You can also remove both tires and strap them directly behind the bike so you are not bashing them and for better balance. I'm really curious now....I'm gonna go test this at a local trail and compare the effort/time vs. pushing the bike up ![]() |

ps. if you could take the tram up, hit the peak for another 2000, then you would have a 10,000 descent in 16-17 miles, that would be one of the greatest descents in the world. (still is totally epic). as my friends know, i live for huge vertical rides and steeps/drops also. |

high voltage rock & roll

hey dt, do you think the backpack would work out on this trail? I am wondering if the bike would hit rocks and stuff on the way up since it overhangs to the side and it looks like there are lots of boulders on the trail. Also, since such a long HAB, would it be just plain painful? Interesting idea though, I used to have one of those too! Definitely would want to try it out before the trip. (pv)

dft you are amazing. I hike that trail years ago. Started at like 10PM and finished near sunrise. I can imagine trying to bike down it. Then again I have bike down some trails in the Angeles that are pretty hard to bike up. But that is bad a$$

Was a great ride! Nice meeting you guys and thanks to Craig & Craig for the shuttle up and to all for showing me the trail. Had been waiting for the chance to ride this one for ages and it didn't disappoint. Hopefully next time it won't be so windy - have never been that cold in my life... I got blown right over twice and blown into more than a few prickly bushes. All in all an epic ride and one of the more challenging ones I've done... Unfortunately I can't make it on the 23rd, but I will definitely be there again.
~Evan I have a few good pics... unfortunately they're all too big to post here so check them out in the photos section: http://www.socaltrailriders.org/gall...hp?photo=12607 |

Please post this ride in the future, that trail looks sweet. I remember the original post on empty beer. I think it said something like Iron Mountain on steroids for 8000' . 11 mile h-a-b sounds like a blast
. I wojnder if Crash knows about this one, because it would make a great push-a-kona.
