Thumbs up RR: Holy Jim - Jake Goes up and Back

Our Path ride took us out to Holy Jim to ride today.
It was a perfect size grop for Jake's first "offical" Path ride! We had Joel, Tim, Chivo, Lacey, Jake and myself. And we would later be caught by Sid, CJWally and Dan.

We drove the road in, mainly because I didn't want Jake using up all his pedal power on the fire road.
I don't think I've ever seen as many cars parked at the Trabuco Wash road, as there were today.
The drive in was un-eventful, and we made pretty good time.
Once parked, everbody geared up, and we were off!

I let Jake know that we would be climbing for a while, and to just find a speed he was comfy with and spin.
We wouldn't see the rest of the group until we hit the top. That was OK though, Jake just kept on truck'n!

Lacey would later tell me that she felt great on the climb up, and it was good to be back out on the trails!

He did GREAT on the switchbacks, REALLY surprizing me! He didn't make them all, but he gave'em a good try!
He had to stop a few times, and was happy to see the one short downhill just before the top. Once at the top, we took a good break, had a bite to eat, and got ready for the DH!

Once again the others broke off, and Jake and I brought up the rear. He was moving right along, with some good speed, and confidence, on a trail he'd just rode up, and was happy to be going DOWN!

Then it happened!

He got to one of the upper sections where the trail drops down, then back up again, a little off camber, and a little rocky. He made the down, and started back up, but lost his momentum, and was in too hard of a gear to pedal. His front tire hit a rock, which stopped him in his tracks, and sent him over the side of the hill!
He rolled down about 10 feet, where he came to a stop on the rocks and in the bushes.

First thing he says is "I'm good"!

I went down and got his bike while he took a minute to double check, and make sure nothing hurt.
After a couple of minutes, he was raring to go again!

That's my boy!

The rest of the ride down was good. He slowed down a bit, and was cautious at the switchbacks, and where there was some more exsposure. Once with hit the lower section, he was back to hoping off of the roots and rocks, and really had some flow going!

We got back to the cars where the others were waiting patiently, and called it a day.

Jake said he'd love to go back again some time soon. The climb was hard, but the long downhill was a GREAT reward! I've planted the seed, and he's letting it grow!

On to the picture show............

Jake, Lacey, and Chivo pedal to the HJ trailhead.

Jake starts the climb up.

Jake riding the switchbacks like he knows what he's doing!

Jake finds out that "it's a long way to the top, if you want to rock and roll"!

Lacey and Jake getting a break at the top.

This was the only picture I got of Lacey during the whole ride!

Jake get's to enjoy the long downhill!

And last but not least, Jake riding the lower rock garden!

A great ride with my kid's!
( Well, at least the one I can keep up with)

Sweet RR Big D. That's what I'm talking about. It's not the quantity of the ride, but the quality of the rides that keep me going. You've got that mastered.

That's so cool! I love reading about positive role models when the news is so full of losers that can't be proper parents.

It sounds like you've created two monsters. There's a great satisfaction seeing your kids conquer something that's tough. I know a lot of adults that really struggle on that trail.

Awesome. Maxwell glad to see that your kids share the family trait of rubberband resilency to crashes.

Crash and Jake....Good to see you guys on the trail. Beautiful day! The trails were perfect. On the way over to Trabucco, there was frost on the ground in shaded areas. A little chilly up top!

Thumbs up Thanks!!

Thanks for all your encouraging words guy's!
I'm gonna show Jake all your post's when he get's home from school today.

He wasn't sore at all this morning, and was still talking about how much fun it was. I told him to think about this;
You did something over the weekend that nobody in your school (he goes to a small private school) has ever done.

Damn Darin, I'm so freekin jealous! I've done everything I can think of to get my boys to ride with me, but they're just not into it. And then again when I read about Jake going over the side that put that lump in my throat, you know the one I'm talking about. Jake looks like he could develop into an awesome rider. Tell him not to continue to follow the "Crash" legacy though.

Default Jake is the man

The cool thing about watching your kids grow up is that it's less stressfull than watching mine grow up.

It is cool to see Jake enjoying his first epic singletrack experience.

I have two daughters. My older one turned 14 today. She rides, and races dh. My younger one is 11. She loves to ride, but mostly on the sidewalk. They are both sweet, and bring way more joy than stress.
