Red face RR: Have to admit it feels good..........

Ahhhh. No… I did not shave my legs!

Since 1991 I have always ridden with a hydration system / backpack and never used water bottles. A buddy told me that for shorter rides on his SS (under 15 miles) he uses a tool bag under his seat and only one water bottle.

What the heck I will give it a try. So out came the tool bag from the early 90’s and purchased a water bottle cage (had small bottle). Bolted the cage to the seat tube, loaded up some tools, tube, cell phone etc….in went the water bottle and off I went.

Went for a 14 mile ride on the local trails from my house (San Clemente Single tracks). Hey it feels kind of nice.

What I liked
 • The ability for future rides to just fill up a water bottle and go.
 • Your back doesn’t get all sweaty.
 • Easier to stand up and crank without a pack on. A real plus for SS’ing.

What I didn’t like
 • Bike is heavier.
 • The water bottle gets dirty. Pedaling want wiping the sip valve off is a bummer.
 • Water doesn’t stay cold. On my hydro pack in insulates the water and keeps it cooler.
 • Less convenient to sip water….however it is manageable.
Again I like it for shorter rides. Going to try and move the water bottle cage to the DT from the ST to see if the bottle stays cleaner

Plan a head (keep one ready)and don't fill the bottle to the top(3/4) and freeze it...they pull it out of the freezer and top off w/ water.....this will help a lot having cold water/cytomax or whatever thru out your ride

on hot(ter) days fill as full as possible...leave only enough room for expansion and then don't add anything before you leave...it will melt fast enough on it's own

For SS a heavier pack allows more force standing on the pedals with less counterpull needed on the handlebar.

I've seen it save the backs of people going OTB.

I agree. I don't like to wear my CamelBak, either.

I use both 20 oz & 24 oz bottles on the ST & DT. It's been good enough in cool weather for 4+ hour rides. In hot weather, it won't last more than 2 hours, though. I use the insulated polar bottles, which do well in . . . insulating cold drinks. The polar bottles work well.

Dirty bottles is a definite drawback. IMHO, the weight is better on the bike than on your back. Also, another drawback: Camelbaks provide some insulation in some tumbles.

They have these new water bottles that have a special outer insulated layer that freezes on the outside. I forgot who made this water bottle but they look pretty cool.

On shorter rides I am starting to get into no camelback, feels good.

of it but this is where you lost me.

"the weight is better on the bike than on your back"

It is easier for a heavier object to push a lighter object

i usually carry a water bottle and a camelback simply because i'm a sweaty pig and need to hydrate. but the water bottle has the cytomax and the pack has water. Plus you know me i'm always taking pics etc so i need a pack to carry that as well.

Soooo you know- when we ride the San Gabriel's, I carry TWO water bottles! If the ride is over 25 miles- I simply stash a bottle or two in the bushes the night before.

You may be laughing.... my riding buddies are not!

On hot rides like here in Arizona I will freeze my bottle overnight and put it my back jersery pocket. Keeps my back cool and you got cold water for the ride. Either that or load it up with ice before.

After riding road for a couple weeks it almost fustrating riding with a camelback now. I might have to throw my road bottle cages on the mtn bike once in a while.

All 4 of my bikes have 2 bottle mounts each. I usually ride with just 2 bottles, unless it's a ride I know will be 3-4 hrs long. It doesn't matter the distance cause you could be several hours and not cover much distance, but lots of climbs. I carried 2 bottles on the Toad Festival, it was supported, but I didn't need any refills. Maybe I don't hydrate enough.

Ok this may help, if it's not a long ride but social one and I want to bring snacks or a beverage of sorts, I'll bring a pack.. Night riding requires me to put my battery pack in my camelbak, but I did poke a hole in one of my jersey pocket to run the wire through the inside so I didn't have to wear a camelbak on the Fully one night.

I stopped using my camelbak on shorter rides for a while now and love it. I just have a small saddle bag that carries the essentials. I feel much more "free" when riding now

I thought Dino and I were the only ones who didnt use a camelback. Im glad we are not alone.

Maybe the camelbacks are for those who dont sweat alot.
I like most here use a camelback for the longer rides to put more things in the pack like food, tools etc. I also use it for a little back protection when riding the chunky stuff. It is by no means a replacement for a back protector like a pressure suit.

when it's not too hot, like today-especially if i'm riding for less than 2 hours- i bring my camelback, but i don't fill it with water. i bring a liter bottle, drink half before the ride, leave it in my car, and drink the rest after. it makes me feel a lot lighter on the trail. i think i'll bust out my old tool bag next and leave the camelback at home...
