Default RR: 12Hrs. of Temecula

Wow, what a day!
We packed the car and were off to the Wine country at 6 in the morning stopping by Ralphs to pick up some last minute items. We pulled into the campsite around 7:30 and thats when those old feelings of nervousness and butterflies made there return to my stomach. I went for a spin thru the campground and they went away...a little.
STR was representing well as I saw Pho'dUp, 1x1Clyde, Surlygal, Maddie, and one of Surly's friends (sorry I didn't get your name).
The kids race in the afternoon was awesome and Maddie immediately took the lead only to get K.O.'d the the first turn my a lesser skilled rider. It was her first big OTB but she handled it like a champ.

The course was awesome, and I like it a ton. The sand wasn't that bad if you held your lines and I'm definitely coming back to ride here more.

So, for my 1st. competion in 4 years, and 1st 12hrs. ever I am hooked again.
WE TOOK 2nd PLACE!!!
The first place team beat us by 2 laps and we beat the third place team by one.
To sum it up, these 12hr. events are awesome for both the competitors and our families. I didn't hear or feel a negative vibe the whole time we were there. This won't be the last 12hrs. and if we get a toy hauler/camper, look out 24hrs.!

Love your recap. Yeah, the race was killer. I was standing at that corner when the monkies took their spills by the bathrooms. Was your little one the second one down when their tires crossed? I was the Nimrod fetching the water. Anyway, hope they are all stoked on their first battle scars now that the pain has subsided. Jason really is a hands on promoter. This was the Nimrods 2nd race and we suffered through it laughing all the way. I think we came in 6th in the three man cat. Did you find the soft spots were not such an issue in the dark? I kinda forgot about them and everything flowed like butter. (Crazy how the mind messes with you.) Thanks again for your stoke filled analyses.

We were in the 5 person catagory. The night lap was easier because you didn't see the climbs ahead of you. What you don't know won't hurt you.
It was Surlygal/1x1clyde's daughter that played supergirl!

Congrats guys and gals on your finishes. I know that Hurkey Creek will have another 24hr event in Spring. I may be putting a 5 man team together if the team I raced with in Sept isn't going to enter. I'll keep you all posted. Ben, congrats on your 2nd place finish and Tim and Michelle on your 7th.

Man....I am destroyed today!! Bootleg last weekend....12 hours of Tem this weekend...I need a break!!

Showed up at the campgrounds at about 630 or so to find it pretty dang cold. By the time of the race it was beginning to warm up nicely. I started first in rotation and was anaerobic for at least the first 30 minutes of the race. The two other Xterra guys that I raced with did an awesome job...one guy on our team laid down 49 minute lap w/o a pre-ride...MONSTER!!

The course got nastier and looser as the day went on. Once the sun dropped it got really bad. The course was pretty shredded and finding the perfect line was impossible.

We ended up 2nd behind the mighty Cytomax team....those guys are destroyers!!

Thanks to all the STR peeps that were out and especially for cheering me out on my last lap....needed that!!

Yeah it was cold at night. Down in the 30's, and inside my car it was about 50 degrees.

That course was pretty tough. But way fun. My 4 person team "The Usual Dustpects" were all sporting the bright green tube socks. Dust and sand was a very fitting description. It made the climbs and hike a bikes even tougher. Hidden sandpits on the second half of the course definitely kept me on my toes.

I loved the little down hill rock garden by the first aid station. None of us pre-rode the course so when I hit that section and saw a racer walking it I thought oooh this must be bad. But I yelled at a race marshall to see if this was a hike-a-bike section and he said "Naw man! Just stay left". I let off the brakes, passed the guy walking it, and just let the bike flow that section. Hit the banked turn at the bottom and was off!

But man that course seemed long. My back was stiffening up after my second lap. I was suited up and dreading my 3rd go around but buddy took a wrong turn and didn't make it back till 8:15pm. Our other teammate came by, she handed us two Newcastles and ended our teams night. Sweet! Time for Tri-tip and beer! I struggled to turn two 1 hour laps, there's no way I way I could turn a 45min. lap at night and make the 9pm cutoff.

It was good seeing Luke, Neil, Tracy, Maddie (man I missed her digger in the kid's race!), Jared, Megan, BJammin, Shudder/Willie, Nam, and Steven out there! Thanks everyone for coming and racing, and supporting, and hanging out! A big shout out to the race organizers for putting on a fun event, and for handing out all bonus cash out on the race course. That extra $20 bucks I picked up on lap #2 was sweet!

Neil (1x1Clyde) you're an animal turning 32:16 singlespeed Solo!

Luke, good job on your team's finish. That Cytomax team was inhuman.

Here's a few pics. Keith B should be happy, I've got a few of my signature pain-face shots below.

Good times!
Thanks to Simon for being there when Maddie went down on that turn. She told me the "other" girl would not move over even though she was slow so she hit the curb and flew thru the air.
She has the usual nicks and cuts with a handlebar imprint on her forehead and some scratches on her chin but overall she is ready to get back on the bike!

It was another great event with the nice vibe that I love, no attitudes just riding!
I was able to move up a slot in the overall and got 2nd in the 3 race series in the clyde division and actually got on the podium for yesterday's race with a 3rd place, that was pretty cool!
Huge thanks to Steven, Jared, Megan, Nam, Zack and of course my wife Traci and Maddie for all the killer support and encouragement...by the 5th lap I was cramping pretty bad in my left calf muscle and you can only eat so many Margarita Clif Blocks!
I was only going to use the SS for a lap or 2 but ended up using it for all 6 laps, it was brutal pushing a 32x16, emphasis on pushing, but all in all I wasn't that far off the top 3 SS racers so that was pretty satisfying since I think I outweighed the SS solo winner by 80 lbs!

Here are some pix Traci got, thanks to all that said hello and great to meet some faces!

Myself and Mr. Moore-Nomad- at the start

Me and Maddie!

The roll out

Jared and Megan

Jared, Megan and Steven, the super support crew!

Coming in!

Robert and his wife, Tracy

Michael-Shudder-

Willie, Michael's Son, with some carnage. He ended up winning the overall for his age so he got the series winner's jersey!

Thanks again to everyone, it was blast!
Some stats from yesterday:
lap 1- 1:10. lap 2-1:15. lap 3-1:13, lap 4-1:15, lap 5-1:18, lap 6 1:27
18 Maragarita Blocks, 6 Cliff shots, 2 70 oz bladders, 9 water bottles, 3 Newcastles, 4 Oreo Cakesters, 1 PB&J, mashed potatoes and 1 shot of Jameson!
Total was 60 miles with 8250 feet of climbing...I am tired today!!
