Want to go to the San Gab's? Check the real-time weather here!
We had a great group today. 15 total! The STR gang were me, Endo Verendo,Kanga,Bigringrider101 and lurker but soon to be on-line, Madame Dabalot! Also some OTb boys and everyone seemed to bring a friend or two. Mileage was 21, give or take a few miles. Lots of climbing. Anyone know the gain? It was warm and clear.
Poor John of OTB caught a branch in his derailleur hanger that somehow made his rear wheel spit off the rear of his bike (where rear wheels tend to be y'know) and flop into the dirt,along with him. Hanger bent, busted spoke or two and a few other unfixable things had him schlepping back to the car. Sorry dude!
Ripping singletrack, technical switchbacks and one fine dive into the decomposed granite! Tah-Dah...my first ever face plant. Not as nice as say, an ocean dive where you see fish and stuff and it's gentle as the water engulfs your face. This was more like..hitting a f'n rock with your f'n face. And there are no pretty fish. Just decomposed granite pebbles swimming in your teeth. Yeah, fun. Shoulda brought my snorkle! No broken teeth, just a fat lip and a very sore hand. Guess I need to go do it again asap! Took the wind out of my sails but the ride remained fun and other switchbacks were conquered so the day was still a great time with new and old friends!
Highlights were watching the great lines Kanga chose! Endo Verendo lovin' life and making it all look easy on his niner. Everyone else for just being there and clearly having fun. Bigringrider101 is always a special guy! You were all great! Thanks!

Liz, faceplants suck! I have broken two pairs of glasses while they have been on my face...not pretty. The caveman aproach to bike repair looks interesting...glad you all had a good day with no serious injuries...except to someones bike.

You forgot to mention the continued post-ride camraderie at the Hill St Cafe! Yes, it was a good time, and i was glad to show you some lines you didn't know were there. Hillyer has so much potential. Next time I'll run tubeless with lower pressure and WILL make it up the wall! It just got too loose for the pressure I was running and the lack of tread on my rear tire.

Thanks Endo for the carpool option....

Good times for sure. Ride stats from the Garmin TC Software:

Distance: 21.89 (But I did double back about a half mile on the fire road)
Moving Time: 2:36
Avg Pace: 7:08
Avg Speed: 8.4
Max Speed 27.9
Total Ascent: 4282'
Total Descent: 3392'

I question the total ascent figure (even though it felt like 4000') as my Edge was reading about 3400' of climbing at the end of the ride. Unless there was a large front moving through, the climbing and descent should be close, since we started and ended in the same place.

Ride is up on Motionbased at http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/4464234

It was really fun. The photos are great, but of course, never do a trail justice.

Thanks Liz, and everyone.

The extra credit was excellent. Trail to 3 Points, then Silver Mocassin all the way back. Total 25 miles! Visited Newcomb's Ranch for grub afterward. The food was good, the Craftsman Poppyfields (named after a street in Pasadena) Ale was hoppy, and the service great. If you haven't been there in awhile, check it out. The place is open till 10pm everynight.

You didn't give the Edge enough time to calibrate the GPS and altimeter before starting.

The altitude at the end of the ride is exact - 5400'. (I'm looking at a topo map). The altitude at the start is off by 1000' (too low).

Depends on your requirements:

GPS - both
Barometric altimeter - both

Map -> Vista

Cadence or Heart Rate -> Edge
Virtual Partner -> Edge
Lap statistics, etc. -> Edge
Download routes from Geoladders -> Edge
Handlebar mount - Edge

edit - $75 rebate on Edge 305 through 11/30

I like the info. you can get from an altitude computer.I have a VDO MC 1.0 that tells altitude gained and ride time. It's the little map that's cool. I don't use HR function. Honestly, I wish the low end Garmin had total end of ride ascent I would have kept it. That was a few years ago. Maybe they have added it on since then. It is on sale at Performance. The 75 rebate makes it 295.00. Thanks very much!

Not to make it anymore confusing but what's the difference between that and Garmin eTrex Legend HCx GPS?

You need to go to Garmin's site and use the compare models feature. There are small differences but it could be a huge difference if you where looking for that function.

Vista's are the top of the Etrex line and have the most functions. I turn off some of the functions to get longer battery life.
