Default Aliso sat beginner ride (aka how I broke my wife)

So, the ride went well up to a point. It came down to 6 people total and we were off and rolling by about 800. swell. Things were going quite well up to the end of coyote.

We made it to the near end of coyote when my wife took a great fist full of front brake on the fallen sycamore leaves at the top end of coyote right before the bridge. We didn't know at the time, but she has (at least) broken her elbow and radius near the joint. She went to the walk-in clinic Saturday and due to the pain, she wasn't able to fully cooperate with the x-ray people and we think there's more damage to her arm near the shoulder.

Being a trooper, she rode back out with the ladies (1/2 our group) back to the car one armed but she did have to walk some of it.

...And being the awesome wife that she is, she told me and the other two guys to keep on with the ride. apparently we missed a huge group of path/STR jerseys heading up the main valley fire road towards Cholla. So, the guys went and did up Cholla and down Mathis. at least it was a ride.

We find out today at about 300 what the final bone break count is and find out if she's got a cast or not (likely) and about surgery (hopefully not- praying begins now)

For the mean time, I apologize if I snap at anyone this week- being on kiddo duty (wife can't pick up the kiddo at all) I'm sure I'm in for little sleep this week.

Sounds like she's a real trooper. Healing vibes sent her way. Hope she avoids surgery.

you did??? schitt- sorry, man- we've been screening calls due to a freakish situation with a ex-girlfriend of Ash's (NOT good- borderline restraining order- ask Tammy- she knows the story)

I'll PM you our digits. we're going to have to setup a dinner or something soon so I can meet V and see why she puts up with you.

no kidding. can this year just end? Its nothing but a suck-fest for our family, with the only good asterisks (for you baseball fans) being the birth of the Kid and nearly two weeks in Maui.

seriously, look at the list:
  • dad's mtb accident/nearly 3 weeks in the hospital
  • my mom's cancer came back (she's doing much better, BTW)
  • ash's mom's issues (foot surgery, blown out other knee, nearly blown out same leg as foot surgery, not sure where we're at yet)
  • me throwing out my back and being on the DL for three months
  • me losing my job
  • wife and me getting sick at the same time
  • a great aunt likely coming to the end of her tractor pull (last of 6 siblings, of which one was my grandma)
  • and now Ash breaking her arm.
I vote we ditch the rest of the year (seriously, what's 1.5 months dropped, right?) and head for January 1 for a new year and my birthday.

Sorry to hear about the wife. I'm sure she'll never let you hear the end of it as long as you live.

Good luck and get some sleep if you can.

actually, she's bitter at herself for two reasons:
a- now not being able to help with the kiddo
b- not being able to finish the ride- she's really wanting to get back on the bike.

she will not hold this over me- mountain biking has been my thing even before i met her, which was a little over 10 years ago, which is cool.

Sorry to hear a newer rider got hurt so quick. Let her know that's rare and hopefully in the future she'll be able to jump in on one of our newbie rides.

Healing vibes heading your way!

Thumbs up

I'm so sorry to hear about the accident. Your family will be in my prayers tonight. The only council that I can give is to both support each other... you will survive this and someday laugh about all the sh*t that happened in one year.

Ethan, my friend,... you will get through this and if you ever need to just shoot the breeze, give me a call... let's talk. If you need someone to fix a dinner, Nancy & I would be more than happy to volunteer.... besides, I'm a good cook. You're not alone in this.

thanks all. update on the wife: arm still broken. damn medical industry sucks. the docs basically said "yup, it's broke" yesterday and put on a new soft cast and splint. the MRI was a no-go but she's apparently getting a c-t scan here today at 11.

the cool thing is these new splint things- its a soft piece of thick fabric but when you get it wet and form it, it goes nearly plaster cast hard. cool tech! benefit for her on this new cast is that it supports more of her arm, so getting up and down involves less "ow"s.

its a "radial" break, which apparently means that out of two types of breaks, its the worse one to have and surgery is a potential. fock.

the good news is that one of Ash's good friends has basically moved in with us to help during the day.

edit: next update will be in the "rider down" forum as this kinda no longer belongs here.
