Default I have been waiting 5 years for this!!

I really have not been waiting 5 years for this but today was a very important day in my life:
My daughter Madeline and I went for a ride, just the 2 of us, with a group, on a trail!

I made a promise to myself that when the time came for Madeline to make a choice about riding bikes or not , if she wasn't into so be it but if she was into it....the world is hers!!

I asked her yesterday if she wanted to go on ride with some other peeps, she knows Dino, Nam, Alyssa and Jason- see Nam's RR about the Newbie ride at Peter's today- and right away she was in. Especially since she was getting a shiny new purple chain put on! That's her favorite color right now.

We loaded up the truck with our SS's, filled her camelbak and off we went to meet the group at the Albertson's. As with most 5 year old kids, the minute we shut the car off she was shy and quiet even though everyone around was being extremely friendly.

Her shy face:

Her not so shy face:

We took our time down the sidewalk to the entrance, it just amazes me how fast she will go with a rear V brake only and 20x1 3/8 tread, she is fearless!!

Regroup:

"Uncle Nam" on his 4x IH and Tito

She had a blast on the little singletrack that we don't even consider "tough", going around the lake and heading to the 1st little hill. Duan and Sam hung back with us, thank's guys!
around the lake:

We got the bottom of the 1st hill and Elvie was at the switchback entrance waiting for us and when I said, " you want to take the switchbacks up or just go up the hill?". She pointed to the hill and up we went. Not very far but she was stoked to have gone up just a little bit of it. I grabbed her rig and up we hiked. Got to the top, regrouped and then she decided she wanted to ride down this one.....I wasn't real comfortable with her riding this one so we walked down, rode a little bit of the flat bottom and then hiked up the next hill. Sam was a trooper and tried twice to get up that left side but on a 29er set 32x18, he is a animal!!

The next little dh just about floored me. She wanted to ride it and she did...with that V-brake working overtime and one foot out but she made it almost to the bottom but the last steep pitch was a bit much so we hiked that and then back on the bike to regroup.

The group was on their way to the base of Big Red and I knew she wasn't up for that yet so we took the low road to the end of the park. A fun and easy road. To her, it was epic!!
We had some fun, she got comfy pretty quick!

A Youtube link to her "assault" on the trail!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fb8R92_oL48

We got the end in no time flat and then hung out at the bench at the bottom of the singletrack.

Her fun pose!

As we were hanging out and waiting to see if the group was heading this way Madeline decided she was going to "hike up a little" and see if she could ride this section...wha wha what? SURE!!! I could not have been happier at that moment

Here she is her checking it out and then putting them feet on the pedals!

After that we pedaled and hiked our way up to the top of the trailhead, where the rolling fireroad ends, and then hung out there to see if the others were on the way...I really should have brought my phone

We waited 15 minutes, then went back DOWN the trail where I once again was floored by her. She was riding the downhill all the way until it had that little pitch back up. She told me she had the wrong gear...that made me laugh!

We got back to the fireroad and there she worked hard on that ever so slightly vertical gain all the way back to the lake. Along the way we saw 6 dogs- she was missing our puppy Penny hence the counting of dogs- and then lo and behold we see Hugh and his Boston Terrier. She did fantastic pushing her 38x17 gear but we took our time, had a few rest stops and had a snack to refuel at the bench at the bottom of Big Red. Hearing her hoot and holler on the last stretch of singletrack from the south side of the lake to the entrance was killer. To some it might seem like a ho-hum trail but to her as she put it: " I'm in the wood's daddy!"

The sidewalk back up to Albertson's was a moment for a every parent out there...she told me she was tired, how much fun she had, where the heck did Alyssa and Nam go?- sorry Jason!- how much she loved me and are we coming back next week?...............it truly does not get better then that!!

Thanks for reading!

Awesome post!! I love seeing stuff like that.

One of my best days riding was my oldest son's first ride. Now that he's into it, I can't wait to get my other 2 kids in the mix.

Congrats!!

Neil this is what Dad's look forward to, and you got to live it today and hopefully for many days to come. You have a great young lady that's a true trooper. I will teach my daughter to ride sans the training wheels and get her out there with me soon. What a great RR Neil, brings a smile to the Dad in me.

Sweet RR!
My kids first off road rides have been at Peters too. My son's first OTB was on the hill right before the bench that overlooks the lake.
Way to go Maddie! I love the no foot pic.

Paging Dr. Rut.... Dr. Andy Rut....

Dino WAS there! I sensed there was something special about the day! Tried to stay out of their way.

All I can say is the second she rolled up on her shiny red bike (with .50" wide tires) it TRULY warmed my heart! You just had to be there!

The most memorable Neil/Maddie moment: She was chomping on her water valve the entire ride. Forgot what Neil said-- something to the effect water was NOT coming out! Correct me if I am wrong. (Top of FIRST big hill)

Can you read the sticker? YOUR BIKE SUCKS!

Take the picture already! LET'S RIDE!

Thumbs up Yes, Grasshopper Neil...

Your destiny is fullfilled... now you know the meaning of little grasshopper and the responsibility that comes with parenthood. Sharing adventure with your children is special... to know that child is a direct result of you and Traci making a committment to each other... is something that can never be taken away. You have started on a wonderfull journey and bumps and bruises lie ahead... but the journey is well worth it.

You are, my friend, a very blessed and lucky man indeed...

Maddie is just badass.... maybe thats why she's called the "Mad Dog" the first time i met her, along with Neil and Traci was at Sea Otter... Neil was out scoping the course and i was hangin out with Traci and Maddie. It was awesome seeing this little girl riding around all over the place on her pink cruiser, basket and everything. Fast forward to today and she comes out rocking a single speed race bike... i think she stole my thunder for bringing out the new bike for the ride

I think the grin from ear to ear on Neil's face summed up how happy he was today that she was out riding with him. It was truly awesome seeing the two riding together as this is just one of the many rides i can see happening for them. Cheers to Maddie and her great parents Neil and Traci.
