Heres more info: _____________________ Thanks for your time on the phone and for getting this information out to as many riders as possible . . . The City of Rancho Palos Verdes City Counsel has been trying been trying to come up with a long term usage plan for an area in Palos Verdes called "The Canyons Ecological Preserve" since the land conservancy took over managing the land a few years ago. This area is heavily ridden by Mountain Bikers and is really the only spot on the coast to ride MB trails between the Santa Monica Mountains and Newport Coast in OC. The "PUMP" committee has been put together and chartered with this task of naming trails, areas and coming up with a long term plan for this area, as well as every other open area in the PV area. The problem is that this committee is made up of a lot of anti-mountain bikers who are using this situation to restrict access or even close big sections of the trials to mountain biking. Last night this committee had a meeting to approve their recommendations of how these trails will be used or restricted and their were a number of mountain bikers present, but we really could use as much support and publicity as possible. I am a resident of PV, and ride, hike or run these trails almost everyday and I only heard about this situation this past weekend . . . Please get out the word. The next step in this process is an open meeting to review "public opinion" by hearing from every user group of this area, including mountain bikers. It would be nice to have an overwhelming showing of support and positive opinion . . . This meeting is scheduled to be held on Saturday November 10th at 9:30am at the Pointe Vicente Interpretive Center (31501 Palos Verdes Drive West, Rancho Palos Verdes, CA 90275-5369 310-377-5370) and could be a few hours long . . . This meeting was announced last night, but there is no announcement on their website yet. For information on the PUMP Committee and this situation, please go to the City of Rancho Palos Verdes website http://palosverdes.com/rpv/planning/...mmary-2007.cfm For a Map of what trails uses are being proposed by the PUMP Committee, please look at this attachment: http://palosverdes.com/rpv/planning/...ANYONS-ER2.pdf For CORBA's suggestion on a trail plan, please look at this attachment: http://palosverdes.com/rpv/planning/...A%20PV.pdf As I mentioned in my note above, I am very new at learning about this situation, so I may be off in my vocabulary or the specific details . . . but I do know that they are looking at closing these trails as early as January 1st, 2008. Please let me know if you have any questions . . . you also might contact CORBA (www.corbamtb.com <http://www.corbamtb.com> ) for more details. |

Bikes don't kill bunnies

I hate to hijack this thread, and normally wouldn't do this, but tommorrow night's (November 7th) PUMP committee meeting is as important if not more so. The trail map that will be presented on the 10th will actually be hammered out on Wednesday night!!!!! For more information, please check out THIS THREAD
I'm stoked there are people getting involved and rallying the troops, but please don't trivialize the importance of tomorrow nights meeting as well as the subsequent meetings on the issue. Our support is needed on a continual basis. I hope to see and meet many of my fellow STR members in a strong showing of support for our mountain biking community. Chris |
