Default Santiago Oaks Regional Park - Robbers Peak Closure

The area surrounding Robbers Peak adjacent to Santiago Oaks Regional Park is private property. For many years the landowners have allowed access of the Robbers Peak area to park users. But due to escalating problems with graffiti, littering, vandalism, un-authorized motor vehicle traffic and complaints, this area is now closed.

The Santiago Oaks Regional Park staff understands that it is unlikely park visitors are responsible for these problems, but are abiding by the landowners request to assist with reducing the number of trespassers. The Anaheim Police Department may patrol the area and trespassers may be cited. Please respect the closure of this area.

Santiago Oaks Regional Park has posted signs on Oak, Barham Ridge, Yucca and Anaheim Hills Trail to define the private property boundaries. A revised trail map for Santiago Oaks Regional Park is available at their website: http://www.ocparks.com/santiagooaks/

So judging by the map, there is no more 3B's to Barham loop? I'm gonna have to check this out after work.

rode it tonight with elvia and julia. i did a pre-loop up the 3 B's and, sure enough, there's a sign at the gate before the 3rd B: Private Property, No Trespassing--so i dropped down yucca, then climbed it (i guess now it's the 4th--and worst--B) up to zips/barham ridge.

at the top of zips i chatted up some hikers from an OC club who claimed it was their fault because their leader recently wrote an article for the register that mentioned robber's peak. but we also talked about how gates on the backside had been torn down so kids/rednecks could drive to the peak, so i'm sure it's not solely the hikers' fault (but nice of them to offer).

goat was in good shape- pretty easy climb, and the s/t was fun on the way down. and since zips is barely a climb, i think that combo will probably become the preferred legal route to the top.

all of this begs the question: if the phantom pooper's scatological work is on the trail, but nobody rides through it--does it really stink?

btw- we did see some riders dropping down to zips from the top, so i'm not sure what the signage is south of the peak.

The map on the Santiago Oaks website ( http://www.ocparks.com/santiagooaks/) isn't quite correct.

There are legal connector trails between Oak Trail (the 3 B's) & Yucca Ridge and between Oak Trail (the 3 B's) & Anaheim Hills Trail.

So if I read this right, the playground up at the top of 3b's is closed?

I talked to the ranger yesterday and he said the area where the drops are is open as long as you stay on the south side of the fence you are ok to ride there.

Is it online, or only in today's print newspaper?

We rode it Saturday and I did not see any "No Trespassing signs". Just 2 signs 1) Private Property and 2) Park boundary ends here (or something to that effect). There were plenty of bikers, hikers and equestrian on said trails. Also the gate at the bottom was open.

it sounds like that's the easiest legal way to do it. let us know...

steve- my kids live in south l.a., so they just assume that if it's not their property, somebody's "fixin' to git 'em"!

    Default reroute of chutes?

I just went to the park website and saw this alert:
Santiago Oaks Regional Park is continuing the effort to design and build a sustainable and user friendly trail system. Repair of the Chutes Trail is scheduled to begin this week. The project will be completed by the same contractor that successfully repaired the Mountain Goat, Cactus Canyon and Bumble Bee Trails. The trail will remain open during construction, but be aware there will be power equipment, soft soil conditions and possible delays.

I looked at the new map, and there's a line marked "chutes trail A" which is the current trail, and "chutes trail b" which looks likes it switchbacks back and forth across the current trail. Does anyone know, is it gonna be rerouted, and "b" is the new route? it looks like the steep rocky part at the very top will be bypassed? aaaargh. or, hopefully, chutes will now have 2 lines (kinda like goat) with switchbacks for climbers, and the straight trail for downhill. that would make sense with the loop option gone and now the ride is mor-or-less out and back.

on another note, is it still legal to: right before the third b, take a right on that fireroad that goes down into the canyon, then climbs back up to the top of zips? i forget if that fireroad is before or after the gate. i didnt see it on the new map. If thats still legal then i think that would be the best short loop option.

uh oh...i hope they don't mess with chutes too much--especially in the middle of the dry season.

yucca is the fireroad that goes to the right at the gate, drops down, then up to zips. it's still legal.

thanks. i dont understand why they always do trailwork in the dry season when the dirt wont hold its shape. especially when this last spring we had perfect trailwork conditions. isnt it better to do all that work in cooler weather anyway?

My understanding is that the re-route of Chutes will be similar to what they did with Goat/Waterfall.....they will leave a lot of what most of us like about Chutes, while the re-route will allow for uphill traffic, again similar to Goat.
