Default Gear Ratio for 29er Single Speed at El Morro

What is the most common gear ratio to run on a 29er single speed at El Morro? I plan on riding my usual loop there, which includes climbs up East Cut Across and out of Old Emerald. I am hoping to find a setup where I am not spinning out too much on the flats, but am also to climb the hills without too much hike-a-bike. I currently run a 32/18 setup for the Fully Loop and could almost go 32/17, but I know these combinations are probably too tall for El Morro.

The best ratio for a SS at El Moro is a multi-ratio set up. I recommend XX 2x10!!

I joke that for SS at El Moro, any combo is the wrong one. FWIW, I run 32/20

34 x 22 is a nice ratio for El Moro.

32:20 works great for me. I would get spun out too quickly at Fully though.

    Cheers,

32:22 but i am a wuss and like long rides in the Santa Ana's so the easier gear is nice after a mile or 20

It is really a matter of pick your poison Eric . With the gear ratio you have you will only have to hike a bike up Old Emerald.
    32/18 ratio gives you a 48.0
32/20 ratio gives you a 43.2 - much easier to escape Old Emerald
34/22 ratio gives you a 41.7 - even easier to escape
32/21 ratio gives you a 41.1 - easiest of all but very high cadence .

I think I would try the 32/20 and you will not have to suffer much except the start out of Emerald.

Just stick with what you have. Its a single speed. Set it and forget it! I have been running the same gear ratio Since 2001 and have never changed it due to the place I'm riding. Learn to spin as well as mash.

I'd vote for 32 x 20 for a 29er. Been using that combo for years. Works very well in El Morro, and is great for Whiting Ranch/Old Camp/Luge also.

Make sure you're using a wide enough bar for leverage...
